Sustainable development. Sustainable development - jobs for the girls and boys? (Draft text) During the ten years since the Rio 'Earth Summit' conference in 1992, most local councils appointed 'community development' or 'sustainable development officers'. Their prime role in life (so it would seem) is to pretend that they are doing something useful so that councillors have an excuse for doing little or nothing. At East Devon District Council a graduate has been employed for over 10 years at a total resource cost of probably over £400,000 and I have yet to see anything that I would term substantive output. I say that as a scientist who has worked and lectured on the subject. Everybody these days talks about sustainability. In contrast, some local people who operate largely outside of the mind-numbing bureaucracy of local government have made real progress - see the websites of local Wildlife Trusts and in particular the Offwell site based in East Devon. next page back to top of section back to home page.
St Austell. Coordinates: St Austell (/sɨnt ˈɔːstəl/; Cornish: Austol) is a civil parish and major town in Cornwall, England, UK. It is situated on the south coast approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of Bodmin and 30 miles (48 km) west of the border with Devon.[1] St Austell is one of the largest towns in Cornwall: in the 2011 Census (Office for National Statistics) St Austell civil parish had a population of 19,958,[2] with a total of 34,700 living in the wider area comprising several other civil parishes.[3] History[edit] Not long after William Cookworthy discovered china clay at Tregonning hill n west Cornwall, the same mineral was found in greater quantity in Hensbarrow downs north of St Austell.[5] Clay mining soon took over from tin and copper mining as the principal industry in the area, and this eventually contributed enormously to the growth of the town.
Redevelopment[edit] The town centre recently underwent a £75 million redevelopment process. Governance[edit] Parliamentary[edit] Economy[edit] Untitled. Sustainable development.
Sustainable development is a way for people to use resources without the resources running out . The term used by the Brundtland Commission defined it as development with sustainability that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. "[1] Everyone wants a better place to live. Some people want better homes and housing, while other people want better schools, more jobs, better shops, or cleaner and safer streets.
Others may want all these things. A better environment – that means green spaces, play areas, no litter, nice gardens, decent houses, less noise and pollution. But many people now realise that if we are to tackle one issue, then we’ll probably have to tackle the others as well. This is not just a local issue. This approach is called ‘sustainable development’. Most people in the rich nations have most of these needs, but there are still many people living in poverty and in poor quality homes.
