Waste recycling: Utilization of coffee grounds and kitchen waste in vermicomposting. Abstract Vermicomposting using Lumbricus rubellus for 49 days was conducted after 21 days of pre-composting.
Three different combination of treatments were prepared with eight replicates for each treatment namely cow dung: kitchen waste in 30:70 ratio (T1), cow dung: coffee grounds in 30:70 ratio (T2), and cow dung: kitchen waste: coffee grounds in 30:35:35 ratio (T3). The multiplication of earthworms in terms of numbers and weight were measured at the end of vermicomposting. Consequently, only T2 showed significant increase (from it initial stage) compared to other treatments. Evaluation of three composting systems for the management of spent coffee grounds.
Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate the optimum composting approach for the management of spent coffee grounds from the restaurant and ready-to-serve coffee industry.
Three composting systems were assessed, including in-vessel composting, vermicomposting bins, and aerated static pile bin composting, over study periods ranging from 47 to 98 days. Total carbon content was reduced by 5–7% in the spent coffee ground treatments across the three composting systems. Changes in density of nematodes, protozoa and total coliforms after transit through the gut of four epigeic earthworms (Oligochaeta) Abstract Epigeic earthworms are detritivorous organisms that live and feed in the soil litter layer.
These earthworms exert important effects on the presence of decomposer micro-organisms and their microbial grazers, which lead to changes in the rate of decomposition of the organic matter. Bioaccumulation of Pharmaceuticals and Other Anthropogenic Waste Indicators in Earthworms from Agricultural Soil Amended With Biosolid or Swine Manure. Earthworm bioassays and seedling emergence for monitoring toxicity, aging and bioaccumulation of anthropogenic waste indicator compounds in biosolids–amended soil.
Abstract Land application of biosolids (treated sewage sludge) can be an important route for introducing xenobiotic compounds into terrestrial environments.
There is a paucity of available information on the effects of biosolids amendment on terrestrial organisms. In this study, the influence of biosolids and biosolids aging on earthworm (Eisenia fetida) reproduction and survival and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seedling emergence was investigated. Earthworms were exposed to soils amended with varying quantities of biosolids (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4% dry mass). To investigate the influence of biosolids aging, the biosolids used in the study were aged for differing lengths of time (2 or 8 weeks) prior to exposure.
