Concept[edit] History[edit] The earliest computer programs that have some resemblance to demos and demo effects can be found among the so-called display hacks. Display hacks predate the demoscene by several decades, with the earliest examples dating back to the early 1950s. Demos in the demoscene sense began as software crackers' "signatures", that is, crack screens and crack intros attached to software whose copy protection was removed. Competition[edit] Party-based competitions usually require the artist or a group member to be present at the event. There are no criteria or rules the voters should be bound by, and a visitor typically just votes for those entries that made the biggest impression on him or her. The demoscene constitutes the most part of its own audience, with the opinions of the community itself considered the most valid.

Les démos sont réalisées par des groupes de demomakers, des passionnés d'informatique. Généralement, les démos sont temps-réel, doivent tenir dans un espace mémoire restreint, et ne sont pas interactives. Pour les demomakers, le but des démos est de concourir dans des concours de maîtrise technique ou artistique.
Histoire[modifier | modifier le code] Les démos sont probablement aussi anciennes que les ordinateurs, les passionnés d'informatique produisant souvent de petits programmes afin de tester une technologie, une équation, ou un effet visuel. Les ordinateurs emblématiques du demomaking étant le Commodore 64, l'Atari ST et, surtout, l'Amiga[1]. La scène du demomaking se structura très vite.
