'Trailing Rhiannon': A senior thesis. At a Sunday afternoon performance of “Trailing Rhiannon” this spring, Emma Watkins of the Class of 2018 sat atop the balcony of the Wallace Theater, anxiously watching the performance.
Watkins, an English major, is no stranger to the theater; she had been on stage many times throughout high school as well as during her time at Princeton. However, this time was different than the others; this time, Watkins wrote the piece that her peers were performing. “I had the opportunity to see my words, but spoken by somebody else, which was exhilarating,” she said.
“But it’s also completely terrifying because suddenly you’re vulnerable in a completely new way.” Her first endeavor as a playwright, “Trailing Rhiannon” interweaves Celtic folk music with storytelling tradition to reimagine one of Welsh mythology’s most fiercely outspoken female protagonists. Student Program grant to investigate sociocultural aspects surrounding families raising children with disabilities in the Philippines. (June 22, 2018) – Patrice Flynn, Ph.D., professor of business and economics and Morrison Professor of International Studies at Mount St. Mary’s University, has been selected by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board of the U.S. A global scholar: Fulbright recipient tackling health disparities in Africa – Michigan Medicine Headlines. Yolaine Civil, M.D., is working to tackle health disparities in Ghana.
For more than a decade, Yolaine Civil, M.D., had been helping patients and families throughout the state through her role with the Ambulatory Pediatric Clinic at Michigan Medicine. But in 2010 — following a transformative experience volunteering in Haiti after a devastating earthquake struck the nation — her ambitions grew. “While I had always had a deep affection toward helping people in need, including lower income individuals, single-parent households and immigrant families from all over the globe, I knew that it was time to do more after my life-changing volunteer experience,” said Civil, who decided to leave her position at Michigan Medicine and pursue a role with Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders (MSF).
From 2012 to 2014, Civil completed four missions with MSF, working in both west and central Africa to improve the lives of neonatal patients and their mothers. Fulbright Award allows UWRF professor to give her family an international experience. But now, 19 years later, she’s preparing to leave on a year-long teaching journey with her family to Narva, Estonia.
Petree recently won the highly-selective Fulbright award, which allows professors to teach in another part of the world for an academic year. Petree has been at UWRF since 2011 when she helped start the English Language Transition program, ELT. The program teaches academic language to students who haven’t yet met the university’s language proficiency requirement. This includes many international students, who are taught how to write academic papers for their American professors and develop their academic vocabulary skills.
“It’s very fulfilling and rewarding to start the program and integrate the students into campus life and help the students be part of the university while they’re developing their language skills,” Petree said. Petree’s ELT program, of which she is the founding director, was the first time UWRF had an in-house English language teaching service.
