Humphrey Public Leadership Awards honored former Obama administration’s Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Linda Thomas-Greenfield on Wednesday night for her more than three decades of work promoting the values of humanitarianism and responsible global engagement. The awards are presented by the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. “I am humbled and puzzled by my selection for this award but absolutely elated,” Thomas-Greenfield said during her acceptance speech as she mentioned the “giants” that have been past recipients of the award which includes former US vice president Walter Mondale.

PARKERSBURG — Quinn Hartleroad of Wood County is one of seven West Virginia University students who have been awarded the Boren Scholarship, enabling them to study languages in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests, according to WVU. Hartleroad, of Walker, a 2012 graduate of Parkersburg High School, will leave in September for Jordan, where she will study the Arabic language for nine months.

She is the daughter of Jane and Kevin Hartleroad. She will study Arabic at the Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman, Jordan. Hartleroad, a senior international studies major, is a former Critical Language Scholarship recipient, and has studied in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. “I am passionate about learning Arabic and about Middle Eastern history, politics, and culture so this scholarship is vital to my career goals,” Hartleroad said in a story about the Boren Scholarship written by WVU. “I hope to eventually work for the U.S. “I have a lot to learn,” she said. Earlier this year we posted an opportunity on the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship sponsored by the United States Department of State for mid-career professionals around the world. Below is an interview with Madume Kgosietsile from Botswana, one of the HHF 2016-17 recipients.

We hope you will learn from her experience and apply for this professional development program. Tell us about yourself and what you currently do? I am Madume Kgosietsile, from Botswana. I am a criminal lawyer working for the Botswana government as a Senior Prosecutions Counsel. I am currently a Humphrey fellow at American University, Washington College of law specializing in Law and Human Rights. For my professional affiliation, I am hosted by the International Advocacy Director at Amnesty International USA; we work on human rights in Europe, Asia and the United Nations with special focus on US foreign policy. It was a long application process.

What was your profession before you applied for the program? [Humphrey Fellows] 5 Alumni to Lecture on Ethical Dilemmas in a Changing Nation. [CCI] Four underprivileged Telugu girls make it to US college programme. [CCI] Giving wings to dreams: How the US consulate in Hyderabad is helping disadvantaged students. The students have many tales to tell and stories to share. The last 10 months have been exhilarating for Sushma, Srividya and Chandrakanth and they are understandably ecstatic as they narrate their adventures and experiences.

The trio recently returned from the US, after finishing a certificate course from different community colleges, in a field of their choice. "I studied Digital Media Technology in Greenbay, which is located in Wisconsin. Every day was a learning experience. "I was in Houston studying Banking and Finance, and I got to visit NASA's Space Center. "I got to meet people from so many countries and understood different cultures. We are seated at the American Corner, in Hyderabad's St. The students, generally from poorer social backgrounds, are handpicked for the CCIP out of many applicants, after a written exam and an interview. In 2016, six students from the US Consulate in Hyderabad went on this program.

More young people from the United States are to be given the opportunity to study in New Zealand with additional grants being offered from both nations. Education New Zealand, which raises awareness of the country as a study destination is providing US $50,000 over the next two years to support the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Programme and the same amount will come from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the US Department of State (ECA). An international studies major, Balaj is one of approximately 1,200 American undergraduate students from 354 colleges and universities across the country to receive the Gilman scholarship, sponsored by the U.S.

Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad or internship program costs. In addition to her major in international studies, Balaj is pursuing a concentration in global issues and a minor in Spanish.
