The trust's aim is to seek and support new uses of digital technology for social good. We recently co-hosted a conference on charities and open data with the Big Lottery Fund and NCVO, which indicated a growing interest from the voluntary sector. The opening of public sector data over the past few years is one obvious stimulus for this, particularly since many charities are data suppliers due to their work delivering a public service contracts. For many in the voluntary and charitable sector, the starting point for these conversations is the desire to be more effective in addressing social challenges. Whether this is the remarkable intrinsic motivation of wanting to support the communities more effectively, or the extrinsic motivation of doing more with less, the starting point isn't technology, but making the most of the resources we have.

But this isn't new. Charity begins at home for kids. Encouraging children to engage in philanthropy fosters an awareness of the welfare of others and helps instil a sense of compassion.

Australian kids today are very globally minded. Even if they're not watching the Kony video or sending letters to a sponsored child in Asia, they are taking part in gold-coin collection days at school, raising money for charities and causes worldwide. Kids are being exposed to the world of fundraising more than ever – but does that mean they are learning to be more benevolent and philanthropic? Not only does charity start at home, so does learning to be charitable and compassionate. And then that needs to be reinforced through education, says Kristi Mansfield, Sydney Community Foundation CEO, who has just launched a new fund called Kids in Philanthropy.

A charity might say it is finding the staff, resources and funding to get that new service off the ground; perhaps a funder would start to look at the charities they have worked with in the past. But when clients approach us at NPC to help them with strategy or impact measurement, one of the first questions we ask is ‘do you have a theory of change?’ A few years ago, the term ‘theory of change’ meant little to the UK charity sector. Seen as a piece of American evaluation jargon, it did not conjure up much enthusiasm. A theory of change shows a charity or funder’s coherent path from needs to activities to outcomes to impact.
