As we end the year, Hypebot asked some our favorite thinkers, writers, and friends to answer two questions - one looking forward and the other back. Here Ian Rogers, CEO of Topspin Media, answers. Hypebot: Direct to fan and social marketing helped reshape the music industry in 2010. What do you see as the most important business and consumer trends that will shape the music industry in 2011? Ian Rogers: It's interesting, I hadn't really thought of direct-to-fan as shaping the industry in 2010. When major labels are only making a few million bucks each in the space I'd still call it "emerging". I think we'll see a ton of direct-to-fan growth in 2011 as our collective products get better and reach farther.

But there will be plenty of other interesting trends. We all know five years from now we won't be connecting our iPods and transferring downloads over a little wire, those bits will come on-demand and from the cloud. Will Google Music launch (and will it be great? What's Ahead For 2011? Brenden Mulligan: We'll See A Lot More Fan Engagement Tools Appear. Hypebot: What do you see as the most important business and consumer trends that will shape the music industry in 2011? Brenden Mulligan: I think in the next year we will see a lot more fan engagement tools appear. These tools will try to help artists leverage the fans they already have and reward those fans for performing certain actions (like spreading the word on social networks, buying merchandise, etc...). Besides the few that have cropped up already, I'm hearing from more and more people who plan to launch them. We'll also see a lot more attention being focused on video and bringing the internet experience to the living room. Hypebot: Since this is ultimately all about music, what were your top musical moment(s) of 2010? What's Ahead For 2011? Bob Baker: The Real World Is Going To Meet Mobile & The Internet.

Hypebot: What do you see as the most important business and consumer trends that will shape the music industry in 2011? Bob Baker: One technology trend that will affect music marketing is something I call "Real World meets Mobile and the Internet.

" I'm talking about things like image recognition, QR codes, and Near Field Communications (NFC) technology. What the heck are those things? For instance, a QR (quick response) code is an odd-looking square image you can print on a business card, ad, post card, or flier. Some artists are already using QR codes to take people to a private page where they can download free tracks or find a special discount offer.
