My 10 Rules for Giving Away Music for Free... Sunday, July 22, 2012 by paul The following comes from Ditto Music cofounder and CEO Matthew Parsons, who applies a simple premise: 'free' isn't free for the musician, and it shouldn't be free for the fan. And, there are now best practices for maximizing the return on free stuff. 10 Rules For Giving Your Music Away For Free There is nothing wrong with giving your music away for free. Choose one platform to give away your music and direct fans there. Free music is not just for new fans. Get a Facebook like or Tweet, preferably an email address in exchange for your music. Tag fans on Facebook/Twitter when they buy the album or talk about you. Send out regular emails to your list, post at least one per day (fb statuses' shelf-life is 3 hours, tw is less). Basic data (name/age/location/how they heard of you) will give you enough to market. Digidesign Icon. Reviews : Hardware Controller Digidesign's D-Command and D-Control represent perhaps the most ambitious attempt yet to integrate recording and mixing systems. Do these Icons symbolise the future of digital audio workstations, or are they merely expensive control surfaces for Pro Tools? Mark Wherry For those interested in etymology, the word 'icon' came via Latin from the Greek word 'eikon', meaning a likeness, or image, and originally from 'eikenai', an Indo-European word meaning 'to be like'. Without wishing to seem too pretentious, Icon is therefore a rather appropriate name for a system that can be used like a large-format mixing console, without actually being a large-format mixing console.

Icon (which was actually derived from the term 'Integrated CONsole') is the general product name given to the combination of a number of Digidesign's products that can be used together as one integrated system for recording, editing and mixing. New Research Suggests a Counterintuitive Strategy.

When Apple founder Steve Jobs revolutionized the digital music world with the introduction of the iPod in October 2001, he faced a dilemma: How much is a song actually worth in a new marketplace in which production and distribution costs, like the manufacturing and shipping of compact discs, are no longer an issue? Over the last decade, much has changed for digital music consumers — including the growing array of mobile devices that can play music, and the rise of new rivals to Apple’s iTunes store. But one thing has been remarkably steady — the price of a song, long held at 99 cents for the majority of individual tracks (with some hits costing as much as $1.29 and a few less popular tunes priced at 69 cents). The music labels “seem to be charging much higher [fees] than they should,” Iyengar says. From Cell Phones to Digital Music The issue of pricing has long been a thorny subject within the music industry. Conjoint Analysis and Pricing Plans.
