The European Union has long been at the vanguard of political progress on climate policy, and a recent budget proposal that commits 20% of all its funds (€200 billion) to climate-related action is no exception to the rule. The money is intended to 'mainstream' its climate commitments across funding sectors. In a Policy Watch, Sonja van Renssen investigates where this money will come from and whether it really has the potential to reduce carbon emissions from the European Union. http://www.nature.com/nclimate/index.html

By Stefan Rahmstorf and Dim Coumou One claim frequently heard regarding extreme heat waves goes something like this: ”Since this heat wave broke the previous record by 5 °C, global warming can’t have much to do with it since that has been only 1 °C over the 20th century”. Here we explain why we find this logic doubly flawed. http://www.realclimate.org/

Have a look at this nice peice of work from Nature … corrects a piece of evidence that didn’t quite add up. Carbon dioxide was the big driver that ended the last Ice Age, according to a new study of ice core data from around the world. About 10,000-20,000 years ago, Earth started to emerge from a quarter million years of deep freeze as the terrestrial ice sheet rolled back and warmer temperatures prevailed. This timing has been used by sceptics as proof that man-made carbon gases either do not cause global warming or at least do not make it as bad as mainstream scientists say.

Local governments join the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) campaign by passing a resolution pledging to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their local government operations and throughout their communities. To help cities achieve their goals, ICLEI then assists the cities undertake the CCP's five milestones. The five milestones of the CCP and the methodology behind provide a simple, standardized means of calculating greenhouse gas emissions, of establishing targets to lower emissions, of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and of monitoring, measuring and reporting performance. ICLEI has developed several software tools that help cities comply with the methodology. http://www.iclei.org/index.php?id=810

I am a moderate Republican, fiscally conservative; a fan of small government, accountability, self-empowerment, and sound science. I am not a climate scientist. I’m a meteorologist, and the weather maps I’m staring at are making me uncomfortable.
