By using the QFN32 version of the ATMEGA 328p, 0.05" connectors, 0402 components and removing everything not strictly necessary, I've been able to design and hand build an Arduino compatible board which is very small (20.7x15.2 mm) and ultra light (2g) but has exactly the same computing power of the Arduino Duemilanove or UNO. Femtoduino has been developed for ultrasmall Arduino prototyping. I had the need to add "Arduino intelligence" to quite small objects (balls, cubes, mices, etc) so I needed to shrink down the size of Arduino as much as possible.

Femtoduino is the result. For regular prototyping, Femtoduino comes with a handy breakout board which breaks out Femtoduino's 0.05" connectors into regular 0.1" pins so that you can use it on standard breadboards or perfboards. It has 14 digital input/output pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM outputs), 8 analog inputs, an on-board resonator, a reset button, and holes for mounting pin headers. A six pin header can be connected to an FTDI cable or Sparkfun breakout board to provide USB power and communication to the board. The Arduino Pro Mini is intended for semi-permanent installation in objects or exhibitions.

The board comes without pre-mounted headers, allowing the use of various types of connectors or direct soldering of wires. There are two version of the Pro Mini. It's thin! It's the Arduino Pro Mini! SparkFun's minimal design approach to Arduino. This is a 5V Arduino running the 16MHz bootloader. It comes with the minimum of components (no on-board USB or pin headers) to keep the cost down. It's a good choice for a board you want to leave embedded in a project. Please note that there are two versions of the board: one that operates at 5V (like most Arduino boards), and one that operates at 3.3V. Be sure to provide the correct power and use components whose operating voltage matches that of the board. Uploading Sketches The board comes without built-in USB circuitry, so an off-board USB-to-TTL serial convertor must be used to upload sketches. If using the FTDI cable on Windows, you'll need to make one configuration change to enable the auto-reset.
