In states and communities across the country, policymakers are developing a vital capacity to organize and leverage resources to achieve shared goals on behalf of their clients—students, families and communities. From tiny Tukwila, Washington to sprawling Chicago, Illinois, community schools are bringing together public and private resources to meet the needs of the whole child.

Through partnerships, hundreds of community schools are aligning and integrating strategies to support students, strengthen schools, engage families and help build entire communities where learning can happen. Many more places are using components of the community school strategy, but lack the structural and functional capacities to fully implement a vision where resources are coordinated for student success. Social Media Tips for Educators: Building Capacity Among Your Staff

Last Monday, we told you about the fact that we’ve developed social media tip sheets specifically to help state and local education agencies expand online engagement. Our first tip sheet discussed how to develop innovative engagement in a specific community. This week’s tip sheet talks about how to effectively build capacity within a state or local district.

Staff capacity is not a new challenge. State education agencies (SEAs) and local education agencies (LEAs) listed staffing and lack of training as their top two concerns when ED’s Reform Support Network asked them about social media implementation challenges, trumping worries about negative comments and privacy issues. This doesn’t mean, however, that there aren’t solutions. Our latest tip sheet goes into detail about how some state and local districts are solving their capacity challenges. Employees want to see how their work contributes to larger corporate objectives, and setting the right targets makes this connection explicit for them, and for you, as their manager. Goal-setting is particularly important as a mechanism for providing ongoing and year-end feedback. By establishing and monitoring targets, you can give your employees real-time input on their performance while motivating them to achieve more. What the Experts Say So, how involved should you be in helping employees establish and achieve their goals? Since failure to meet goals can have consequences for you, your employee, and your team, as well as the broader organization, you need to balance your involvement with the employee’s ownership over the process.

Create a plan for success Once a goal is set, ask your employee to explain how he plans to meet it. What about personal goals? Do: Reflection.
