Facebook tracks what you do online, even when you’re logged out | VentureBeat

http://venturebeat.com/2011/09/25/facebook-tracking-logged-out/ According to Cubrilovic’s tests, Facebook merely alters its tracking cookies when you log out, rather than deleting them. Your account information and other unique identifiable tokens are still present in these cookies, which means that any time you visit a web page with a Facebook button or widget, your browser is still sending personally identifiable information back to Facebook. “With my browser logged out of Facebook, whenever I visit any page with a Facebook like button, or share button, or any other widget, the information, including my account ID, is still being sent to Facebook,” Cubrilovic wrote.

Luxury Brands Using Social Media Marketing Online «FMM

This past week, Women’s Wear Daily released an extensive recap of the WWD Luxury Forum . The consensus among luxury professionals is that luxury brands and retailers need to build solid marketing foundations online and those foundations (based off of social media ) should focus on building communities and keeping audiences engaged . Ogilvy Digital 360′s Rohit Bhargava and Forrester Research Analyst Jeremiah Owyang recently compiled better practice recommendations for luxury brands venturing into the social media arena. Bhargava’s and Owyang’s practices are starting points for luxury retailers who are contemplating a venture into social marketing. Can luxury retailers venture into social marketing without losing their prestige, aspirational values and sophistication?

Diagram: How the Air Force Response to Blogs « Web Strategy by J

http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2008/12/31/diagram-how-the-air-force-response-to-blogs/ The Airforce has created a process flow diagram that indicates very succinctly how the Air Force can and should respond to blog posts, there’s a lot to learn from here, and for the most part, I try to follow these similar rules. The Airforce, well all military units across the globe come across criticism, so establishing a clear sense of communication guidelines. Thanks to Joey DeVilla for posting this , who learned of this from David Meerman Scott who was in contact with Capt. Faggard who’s involved with the Airforce’s social media team: Twitter , and a blogspot blog , (I’m surprised they don’t have their own blog on the airforce websites, so we’re going off David’s word that this is authentic) On a personal note, my Grandfather was a decorated Lieutenant in General Patton’s 9th Army AirForce station in Europe in WW2, he flew a P47 Thunderbolt, and was one of the very few Chinese American pilots in the war.
Visitors are good, but loyal visitors are even better. Where can you find them? According to research by ad network Chitika , social sites Facebook and Digg are more likely to send returning traffic your way than search engines such as Yahoo! http://www.emarketer.com/Article.aspx?R=1007346

HOW TO: Measure Social Media ROI

Last month, we reported on a survey that found that 84% of social media programs don’t measure return on investment (ROI). The comments in that post indicated that a lot of individuals and businesses want to be able to measure the ROI of their social media strategies and campaigns, but they don’t know where to start. Companies and executives are finally beginning to really jump on the social media bandwagon, and that’s fantastic. However, for social media to fully work (for everyone), businesses and brands need to be able to evaluate the impact their social media use is having, both positive and negative. Measuring social media ROI isn’t impossible, but it can be difficult because many of the pieces that need to be evaluated are difficult to track.

So much for the first generation of big Facebook/MySpace social application startups. Slide and RockYou both got huge valuations in venture rounds. Last weekend I wrote about how the big social gaming companies are making hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue on Facebook and MySpace through games like Farmville and Mobsters. Major media can’t stop applauding the companies long enough to understand what’s really going on with these games. The real story isn’t the business success of these startups. It’s the completely unethical way that they are going about achieving that success.
