Viewshape for Windows. 3D Scanning System. The last couple of years have seen an explosion in home fabrication, with fantastic projects like RepRap and Fab@Home really helping to bring the open source community together.

3D Scanning System

Unfortunately, 3D scanning — in many ways the flipside of the home fabrication coin — seems to have fallen by the wayside. I decided to start the 3D scanning ball rolling by creating the SplineScan computer-controlled turntable. The turntable uses a gearbox for precise positioning, and has fixings for lasers, lights, and cameras. The obvious use of the turntable is for 3D scanning, although it can be adapted very easily to rotate objects for accurate photography or interactive display. I’m currently using the turntable to archive and measure ancient artifacts as part of my Ph.D. studies ( and I have to say that I’m very happy with the results so far. The parts list might look a bit daunting, but the project is not difficult to make. Chassis This is the backbone of the scanner. NextEngine 3D Laser Scanner. Do-It-Yourself Gadgets: Line Laser for 3D Scanning

All I needed was a line laser, but I didn't want to buy one because they're kind of expensive. So I just built my own using stuff I had lying around: Read more if you want to see another line laser concept, 3D scan results and a video. I'll start with the basic items needed: You will need a small DC electric motor, a cheap laserpointer and small mirrors. As the motor spins the mirror the reflected laser will form a perfect line. And here's a video of the laser line: There's another way to create a laser line from scratch: Take an old harddrive, disassemble it and remove the actuator mechanism: Attach a little mirror as shown in the pictures below: The next step is to attach the actuator's coil to some AC current: The complete setup will look like this: The AC current through the coils will cause a vibrating actuator arm.

Here are some of my 3D scans I made with these two setups: This was a fun project and I hope you enjoyed it! Artec 3D Scanners. Autodesk 123D - 123D Catch turn photos into 3D models. White Light 3D Scanner Software and Hardware for 3D Capture - 3D3 Solutions.
