The last Aligned Flow Yoga class for a while Monday, April 21 at Sangha Yoga Collective [share with a friend] Because of my impending rotator cuff surgery, April 21 will be my last class for a while. When I realized I had five regular Monday classes to teach, I decided to wind up with the five Universal Principles of Alignment as taught in my Anusara training. Doug Keller, who's coming to the Boston area to teach this week as well, suggests that "…Organic Energy is expansive, expressing our unique selfhood outward in a way that embraces and affirms the unity of self and world.
…" (Hatha Yoga in the Anusara Style, 2005:21) I have been teaching at Sangha for about a year now, and it is fitting that I "end" on this cycle as our alignment principles do, with the highest expression of the pose. But we don't stop there. I sincerely thank each of you for sharing your practice with me over the past year. As a memento, you can download a flyer for my regular class on Dropify: Pin by Richard Hudak on Just... no. Metamorphosis and Sadness. Metamorphosis and Sadness. I promise a more thorough accounting of my shoulder injury: what happened and what’s wrong. Suffice it to say that yesterday I received some very bad news, and that I appear to be in this for the long haul. I will not be popping handstands, arm balances, urdhva dhanurāsana, or any other poses requiring weight-bearing any time soon.
There are two things that I would share right now, a selection from Thomas Merton’s The Way of Chuang Tzu (New York: New Directions, 1965), and an excerpt from Rilke’s “Letters to a Young Poet.” The former popped into my head when I considered the extravagant mess that is my shoulder, and the latter popped up when I read today’s entry from Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows’s A Year with Rilke (New York: Harper Collins, 2009). Readers will forgive Merton’s somewhat freewheeling interpretation of Chuang Tzu, or Taoism through the lens of Catholic monasticism.

With an open heart, Sara. John Friend on the economics of teaching Yoga. Part I: "Supply and Demand" “As the demand increased, I increased classes. But I didn’t increase classes until I had demand.” ~ John Friend John Friend, Anusara yoga’s Titan, held down three to four yoga classes a day at Wanderlust Festival, Cali, while serving as Mayor of the Anusara Yoga Village that he, Dave Kennedy and his community created for the festival. The village was complete with an art gallery, a tea room, yoga pavilion, acupuncture tent, a Shiva/Shakti altar and Manduka Yoga mats. " It's the second day of the Anusara Yoga Grand Gathering at the annual Yoga Journal Conference in Estes Park, CO. We've just finished a long flow of yoga twists, forward bends, and back bends. Now it's time to play. Today, as we just learned, that means doing an assisted drop-back, bending backwards from standing into Urdhva Dhanurasana, Upward Bow or Wheel Pose. "So, any volunteers? " An 82-year old woman separates out from the crowd and, with a few helping hands, gets up on the stage. Photo courtesy Mario Covic "See how easy it is?
" Simple indeed. So here we all go--dropping back into Urdhva Dhanurasana, assisted by the strong hands of two neighbors. So, Anna, of course, is a friend of Friend's, so to speak, and has practiced yoga for at least the last 30 years, yes? "No, not at all" she confides in me later, when I happen to sit down at her table in the dining hall. That's a tall order. Anusara™ Workshop - The Collective Makeover with Desirée Rumbaugh. 11 years of Naropa University Commencement Ceremonies. | elephan. Ancient History I was born in Boulder, Colorado, during the first summer of Naropa. I was a thoughtful newborn—my parents were both students of that first wild enthusiastic serious summer of Naropa University, in 1974—conveniently, I chose to enter this planetary orb on July 16—the day between summer sessions. My mom named me after Philip Whalen, a round Zen/Beat poet whom she had a literary crush on. As far as my dad was concerned, I was named after Waylon Jennings—they never could agree on much, and divorced (not a moment too soon) when I was six. My mother was a student of Naropa’s founder, Chogyam Trungpa, a wild and sweet trailblazer for meditation in the West. So I grew up around Naropa. I got to take a class with Allen Ginsberg, Beat poet, activist and marketeer supreme. By the time I was 10, my mom was a teacher at Naropa, helping form their English department so they could get accredited nationally.
