ROS

ROS (Robot Operating System) provides libraries and tools to help software developers create robot applications. It provides hardware abstraction, device drivers, libraries, visualizers, message-passing, package management, and more. ROS is completely open source (BSD) and free for others to use, change and commercialize upon. Our primary goal is to enable software developers to build more capable robot applications quickly and easily on a common platform. Willow Garage is strongly committed to developing open source and reusable software.
The ROS/Kinect integration continues to progress quickly thanks to the efforts of the OpenKinect and ROS community. The initial ROS+Kinect contributors -- Alex Trevor, Ivan Dryanovski, Stéphane Magnenat, and William Morris -- have combined their efforts into a new ROS kinect stack . At Willow Garage, our engineers and researchers have also been working on the stack to improve the driver and integrate it with ROS libraries and tools. http://www.willowgarage.com/blog/2010/11/22/kinect-ros-moving-forward-quickly
