Specific tasks in a problem-based learning environment include: determining whether a problem exists; creating an exact statement of the problem; identifying information needed to understand the problem; identifying resources to be used to gather information; generating possible solutions; analyzing the solutions; and presenting the solution, orally and/or in writing. Implementing Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Standards for Science Education

For science education, both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Research Council have proposed important new standards. However, since no set of standards will succeed without the understanding and support of classroom teachers, several questions must be answered before implementing science standards: Which science standards are likely to be used? Will the science standards be used as guidelines or as mandates for change? What processes are in place to ensure the quality of the science standards? OVERVIEW: Since 1983, many states have passed legislation requiring standards for curriculum and assessment, while professional and government groups have been calling for national standards in most disciplines. Science is a creative endeavor of the human mind. It offers a special perspective of the natural world in terms of understanding and interaction. The aim of science education is to develop in learners a rich and full understanding of the inquiry process; the key concepts and principles of life sciences, physical science, and earth and space sciences; and issues of science, technology, and society in historical and contemporary contexts. The National Science Education Standards present these understandings and their interactions with the natural world as eight science content standard categories.
