My Region - U of M study links hitting kids, health problems. A University of Manitoba researcher has found a link between hitting kids and a slew of health problems later in life.
Community health professor Tracie Afifi looked at data from more than 34,000 people in the United States and found harsh physical punishment was associated with a higher risk of cardio-vascular disease, arthritis and obesity. Last year, Afifi released a study showing physical punishment, which included grabbing, shoving, slapping or hitting children, was associated with several mental health problems. Her newest study has added to the list of negative outcomes. "It’s really important for people to understand that this is science that’s showing that using these types of physical punishment on children are increasing their risk that bad things may happen," said Afifi.
Afifi's study did not look at why, but she said other researchers have looked at the question. "Someone lives in a state of chronic or intense stress, which is created by regular physical punishment. Probing long-term effects of spanking. Be warned: Hitting your child can actually hurt them well into adulthood.
University of Manitoba community science Prof. Tracie Afifi has uncovered a link between spanking or hitting children and the increased potential for serious health problems in the coming years. She said harsh physical punishment administered to kids -- acts of pushing, grabbing, slapping and hitting -- can lead to a higher risk of cardio-vascular disease, arthritis and obesity. More than 35,000 people in the United States participated in the research, with adults reporting conditions in the homes where they grew up, and their current health state. Afifi said the higher risk came in at a 1.3 per cent increase over the group that didn't report physical punishment. Afifi reminds people the findings are only increased likelihoods and associations -- not every child who is subjected to physical punishment will be susceptible to health problems as a result.

Dr. What is Tantric Eye Gazing. Eye gazing is the practice of staring into the eyes of a partner or yourself via a mirror.
It is an ancient tantric practice that will dramatically increase intimacy with your partner by allowing a view of your deeper self and also allowing a powerful exchange of energies. Eye gazing is a natural for new lovers and young children but modern lifestyles, a need to focus on other things and multi-task and objectification of humans decreases our inclination and ability to gaze into the eyes of another.
Eyes truly are the window to your soul, so if you want to really know yourself or your partner, try this beautiful, moving experience that Rumi calls “consciousness of union” and brings many to tears. “When eye contact between two people is initiated and maintained, an invisible energetic circuit is established between the two participants, dissolving the barriers that ordinarily separate them from each other, drawing them ever closer into a shared awareness of union.” Image Source: Functional magnetic resonance imaging.
Researcher checking fMRI images Functional magnetic resonance imaging or functional MRI (fMRI) is a functional neuroimaging procedure using MRI technology that measures brain activity by detecting associated changes in blood flow.[1] This technique relies on the fact that cerebral blood flow and neuronal activation are coupled.
When an area of the brain is in use, blood flow to that region also increases. The primary form of fMRI uses the Blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) contrast,[2] discovered by Seiji Ogawa. The procedure is similar to MRI but uses the change in magnetization between oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood as its basic measure. This measure is frequently corrupted by noise from various sources and hence statistical procedures are used to extract the underlying signal. FMRI is used both in the research world, and to a lesser extent, in the clinical world.
Overview[edit] History[edit] Three studies in 1992 were the first to explore using the BOLD contrast in humans. Functional magnetic resonance imaging. Human brain. The human brain has the same general structure as the brains of other mammals, but has a more developed cortex than any other.
Left brain interpreter. In neuropsychology the left brain interpreter refers to the construction of explanations by the left brain in order to make sense of the world by reconciling new information with what was known before.[1] The left brain interpreter attempts to rationalize, reason and generalize new information it receives in order to relate the past to the present.[2] Left brain interpretation is a case of the lateralization of brain function that applies to "explanation generation" rather than other lateralized activities.[3] Although the concept of the left brain interpreter was initially based on experiments on patients with split brains, it has since been shown to apply to the everyday behavior of people at large.[3] The discovery[edit] In performing the initial experiments, Gazzaniga and his colleagues observed what happened when the left and right hemispheres in the split brains of patients were unable to communicate with each other.

The right-handed bias has always been evident in humans, but scientists now are discovering that it is not uniquely human.

Actually, this is quite easy to answer...you have only one brain. However, the cerebral hemispheres are divided right down the middle into a right hemisphere and a left hemisphere. Each hemisphere appears to be specialized for some behaviors. Which Way Do You Spin… Left Brain or Right Brain? Which way is the dancer spinning… clockwise or counter-clockwise? Most people will see her turning counter-clockwise, which apparently means you’re more left brained (logical). I see her spinning that way, and it’s at first almost impossible to imagine her going clockwise. But it happens, usually by focusing or when something unexpectedly alters your perception.
