Beekeeping with the Warré hive. Management of Warre Hives. After using Langstroth, horizontal top bar and Warre hives, we love Warre hives for their simplicity, ease of management and success.

Management of Warre Hives

We’ve had more success with Warre hives than any other hive design, and we don’t think this is by chance. When you first get your bees you should start them in 2 Warre boxes, leaving any extras for holding a jar or bucket feeder. If you’re installing a package or a swarm you can set up the first two boxes – the bottom with bars and the top without. Place the queen cage on the bars (if using a package) and install the marshmallow in place of the cork.

Gently pour the bees on top of the queen cage, leaning the box full of stragglers against the entrance of the hive. Over the next couple months monitor their growth by tilting the bottom box forward. Can Warre hives be used commercially? While most commercial beekeepers use Langstroth hives or other common hive designs, there are a number of beekeepers running large-scale Warre hive operations. Top bar hive vs. Langstroth (I’ve tried both and here’s my verdict) Pros and cons of frames versus fixed comb. Frames (and semi-frames) The People's Hive of Abbé Emile Warré is presented as a tiered or storified, vertical top-bar hive.

Pros and cons of frames versus fixed comb

However there are some beekeepers who use it as a frame hive, whilst retaining several features of Warré's method. This page examines the frames issue and offers construction data on the frame versions. Abbé Emile Warré's comments as follows regarding frames:1 Frame honey is more costly to produce than fixed comb honey. Pfarrer Johann Thür was a contemorary of Warré, although the two were probably unknown to each other. Natural comb hives use a far lower weight of honey in winter than frame hives because the latter dissipate more heat. Thür repeatedly stressed the importance to bee health of retaining the nest scent and heat. Gilles Denis and Marc Gatineau have developed frame versions of the Warré hive for certain purposes.

A collar attaches over the hive entrance in a bee tree and is sealed such that the bees must pass through it in order to enter or exit the hive. After leaving the collar in place for a few days, the rest of the trap is attached to the existing collar. A few frames of drawn comb are added to the trap. After several days, the bees will have accepted the trap as part of their hive. The trap can now be activated by inserting the gate with the cone up, which prevents the bees going from the trap back into the tree while still allowing bees to exit the tree into the trap. The cost is about one-third to one-fourth the cost of one standard ten frame Langstroth hive. A Warre (pronounced war-ray) hive is simple to manage and maintain. Also known as tiered or supered top bar hives, a vertical top bar hive is such as the Warre hive is friendly to the bees since they are allowed to draw out their own comb. The hive is commonly under supered (nadired) which means the new hive boxes are added to the bottom and not the top of the hive. This promotes the bees natural tendency to build down ensuring a hive environment that is healthier and better suited to their own needs.
