1 (number) The glyph used today in the Western world to represent the number 1, a vertical line, often with a serif at the top and sometimes a short horizontal line at the bottom, traces its roots back to the Indians, who wrote 1 as a horizontal line, much like the Chinese character 一. The Gupta wrote it as a curved line, and the Nagari sometimes added a small circle on the left (rotated a quarter turn to the right, this 9-look-alike became the present day numeral 1 in the Gujarati and Punjabi scripts).

The Nepali also rotated it to the right but kept the circle small.[1] This eventually became the top serif in the modern numeral, but the occasional short horizontal line at the bottom probably originates from similarity with the Roman numeral . In some European (e.g., Germany) and Asian (e.g., Israel) countries, the little serif at the top is sometimes extended into a long upstroke, sometimes as long as the vertical line, which can lead to confusion with the glyph for seven in other countries. . 1. 2 (Two; . It is also a Stern prime, a Pell number, the first Fibonacci prime, and a Markov number—appearing in infinitely many solutions to the Markov Diophantine equation involving odd-indexed Pell numbers. It is the third Fibonacci number, and the third and fifth Perrin numbers. Two is the base of the simplest numeral system in which natural numbers can be written concisely, being the length of the number a logarithm of the value of the number (whereas in base 1 the length of the number is the value of the number itself); the binary system is used in computers. For any number x: x+x = 2·x addition to multiplication x·x = x2 multiplication to exponentiation xx = x↑↑2 exponentiation to tetration In general: hyper(x,n,x) = hyper(x,n-1,2) Two also has the unique property that 2+2 = 2·2 = 2²=2↑↑2=2↑↑↑2, and so on, no matter how high the operation is.

Two is the only number x such that the sum of the reciprocals of the powers of x equals itself. This comes from the fact that: . About this tool About Cookie Control. 3 (number) It is frequently noted by historians of numbers that early counting systems often relied on the three-patterned concept of "One, Two, Many" to describe counting limits. Early peoples had a word to describe the quantities of one and two, but any quantity beyond was simply denoted as "Many". As an extension to this insight, it can also be noted that early counting systems appear to have had limits at the numerals 2, 3, and 4.

References to counting limits beyond these three do not appear to prevail as consistently in the historical record. Three is the largest number still written with as many lines as the number represents. (The Ancient Romans usually wrote 4 as IIII, but this was almost entirely replaced by the subtractive notation IV in the Middle Ages.) To this day 3 is written as three lines in Roman and Chinese numerals. This was the way the Brahmin Indians wrote it, and the Gupta made the three lines more curved. .

Luck, especially bad luck, is often said to "come in threes".[4] About Us « Applied Geographics. Business Communications Solutions from Avaya. Home | Spatial Networks. Inferential mapping. A map is a highly effective tool for the communication of information. It is the most elegant and compact method of displaying spatial data. Transferring raw geographic data from spread sheet to a map format gives us the ability to make inferences based on what we see.

It’s human nature to attempt to define reality and quantify the environment in which we exist. Maps presents us with a tangible medium to help arrive at assumptions and analyze a phenomena. Without knowing the nature of the data on the map below, we can already make an inference as to what is being communicated. The red points displayed on the map represent every roadside bomb and IED attack between 2004 and 2009. Many questions come into play, such as, is there correlation between IED attacks and the road networks connecting to the neighboring country of Pakistan?

If you’re a regular reader of my blogs or listener to my pod-casts, you’re probably involved in public safety in some way or you manage E 911 in your company’s PBX infrastructure. You also more than likely understand that caller ID is used for routing E 911 calls to the proper PSAP, and all that magic happens based on some information listed in the MSAG database or Master Street Address Guide.

In many ways, MSAG is at the heart of the E911 system today, at least from a routing perspective. With the adoption of NG911, we’ve said many times that telephone numbers and the locations they represent (ANI / ALI) can finally go away. With the pending demise of ANI / ALI, since the MSAG is fed from that data, it, in itself, is also on a very short leash. At a bare minimum it will need to be replaced in order to realize the full benefit of NG 911 and routing based on IP-based location objects and the geodetic data that they will contain.
