Last week we looked at Marketing Definitions and Ethics to address the many criticisms of marketing. This week we are going to look at a few concepts and terms to help understand Marketing Strategy and the Four Ps of Marketing. A Few Concepts / Terms Marketing Concept - the idea that an organization aims all of its efforts at satisfying its customers at a profit. Marketing Management Process - is the process of (1) planning the marketing activities, (2) directing the implementation of the plans, and (3) controlling these plans.Marketing Strategy - specifies a target market and a related marketing mix.Target Market - a fairly homogeneous (similar) group of customers to whom a company wishes to appeal.Marketing Mix - the controllable variables the company puts together to satisfy this target group (see list below).Differentiation - means that the marketing mix is distinct from and better than what is available from a competitor.

Marketing affects almost every aspect of our daily lives but is much more than "selling" or "advertising. " It serves an important role in society. Before we can get into Marketing Strategy Planning and Evaluating Marketing Opportunities it will be helpful to review the definition of marketing and the ethic norms and values for marketers to help us address the many criticisms of marketing. Definition of Marketing Our book, Basic Marketing: a Marketing Strategy Planning Approach, 17/e defines Marketing as: the performance of activities that seek to accomplish an organization's objectives by anticipating customer or client needs and directing a flow of need- satisfying goods and services from producer to customer or client.

Compare that to the American Marketing Association definition: Note the similarities and difference between these two definitions.
