Matthew and Cassie's Big Climbing Trip. Wow it's been a crazy month since our last post. We went to the City of Rocks for climbing and then all heck broke loose with traveling. This post is a recount of our trip over the last week of August. We went to Oregon to visit Cassie's parent's and her grandmother. Had a fantastic time with them for a few days. Went to the coast for a beautiful day walking down the beach and trying to check out some tidepools. So a few days later we left and headed to Washington. Leavenworth but the weather was uncooperative between the wind and the rain so we only did a few routes.
On Friday we headed into the Echantments with our friend Paul (who organized the trip) and his friend Elaina. Saturday (Cassie's birthday) we moved camp further in and took an afternoon nap. Nearby lake and as we single filed down to the lake I turned around and gave Paul the Shhhhh sign and showed him the box. That he is Paul stay back and gave me my chance to pretend to tie my shoe. Usually, my trips away are pretty short and sweet, so it's go go go the whole time and collapse when you get back home.
This was quite different. You were really living in the locations, sometimes months at a time. We were lucky with the weather in two respects. I climbed quite a lot. On the plus side though, my onsighting improved a lot (a number of personal bests) which I think is aided by simply climbing heaps on lots of different rock types. Rock climbing through the middle east: Jordan to Egypt. Before we head into the interior of the mountainous Sinai peninsula, we will spend a day or so on the bolted routes at Wadi Gnai, just outside of Dahab. Sinai has not seen the development of the other major Middle Eastern climbing venue, Wadi Rum, but it has at least as much rock. Sinai does have a long history of climbing; as far back as 1937 a party including the famous Italian climber Comici climbed Jebel Ghara (1,900m) and many of the faces in the area. Tony Howard, the guru of Middle Eastern adventure, has also climbed throughout the region. More recent development by British, Israeli and French climbers has started to touch on the vast potential that this place has to offer.
