Japan's NTT DoCoMo has reached an agreement with NextWave Wireless to acquire the remaining 65 percent equity interest in PacketVideo Corp a subsidiary of NextWave Wireless for USD111.6 million turning PacketVideo into a wholly owned subsidiary of DoCoMo. DoCoMo acquired a 35-percent stake in PacketVideo from NextWave in July 2009. The new acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including clearance by certain U.S. regulatory authorities and the approval of NextWave's shareholders. The transaction is expected to close during the calendar quarter ending September 30, 2010.

MTN Nigeria is expecting to invest at least US$1.5 billion on its network during this year to boost its carrying capacity. Corporate Service Executive MTN Nigeria Mr. Wale Goodluck told The Punch newspaper that the planned investment was a calculated effort by the company to improve on the quality of service on its network.
Speaking to the newspaper, he also noted that the mobile network has had to build a microwave backbone to cope with the lack of investment by the dominant landline telco for handling the voice traffic. Goodluck said, "By sub-Sahara Africa's standard, we have achieved the highest network availability of over 90 per cent, investing in people to meet challenges. A 13 year old girl in California sent 484 text messages every day in December an average of one message every 2 minutes during the waking hours. The father Greg Hardesty told the New York Post his 440 page mobile phone bill revealed his daughter Reina had sent an astonishing 14 528 text messages. The average monthly usage of SMS services for a 13- to 17-year-old teen is 1,742, according to a Nielsen report. "First, I laughed. I thought, 'That's insane, that's impossible,'" said Hardesty, 45, a reporter for The Orange County Register.
