Popular science blog is run by a woman – to the surprise of some on Facebook | Science. A swath of science fans expressed shock Wednesday upon learning that a popular science Facebook page is run by a woman.

Elise Andrew, an English blogger living in Canada, posted a link promoting her Twitter feed on her I Fucking Love Science Facebook page, which has more than 4.2m fans. "I got Twitter! I figured it's about time I started exploring other social media. If you're on there, can you Tweet me some science people worth following? " Andrew said. The post provoked an onslaught of comments discussing her gender and looks. Lou Forbes said: "you mean you're a girl, AND you're beautiful? The page is filled with science-nerd memes, scientific questions (Is de-extinction a good idea?) After the early posts commenting unnecessarily on her looks and gender, others said it shouldn't matter that she is a female. Some used it as a confessional to concede that we still live in a world that has inherent biases towards women with an interest in science.

Abigail Samoun: Elizabeth Haidle: How to get started: Step 1. 6 Minimalist Posters Of Women Who Changed The World. Year 2: Geek Girl Con grows, draws attention to women in tech, science.

Geek Girl Con will be held this weekend at the Conference Center in Seattle. This is only the second year for Seattle’s Geek Girl Conference, but already organizers are expecting almost twice as many people — between 3,000 and 3,500 people per day — to show up for this weekend's event. Although the conference had space limitations last year and had to turn people away at the door, this year, Geek Girl Con organizer Erica McGillivray said organizers have reserved the Conference Center on Eighth Avenue and Pike Street.

That should provide plenty of space for the 90 hours of programming they have planned. The kid-friendly comic, science and tech conference is run entirely by volunteers and is a nonprofit organization. The comicon is aimed at “geeky” women and girls and features a wide range of geeky women (and a few men) presenters. “Geeky professionals that come out, they always comment on how many women come to these events,” she said. Girls Who Code: Crashing the “Brogram” The high-tech industry is largely a guy’s world made up of "brogrammers" and job ads that ask, “Want to bro down and crush code?” Small wonder that women made up just 21% of all programmers in 2010, off from 24% in 2000.

Or that less than 10% of venture-backed companies have women founders. An organization called Girls Who Code is trying to reboot the system starting from the beginning. Girls Who Code is working to close the tech gender gap by teaching girls 13 to 17 the skills they need for a career in technology. Its first program is this summer, eight weeks of 8-hour sessions in New York City where 20 girls are learning everything from coding to pitching a business plan to investors. Program founder Reshma Saujani, an unsuccessful 2010 candidate for Congress and former deputy public advocate for New York City, says she started Girls Who Code not only to educate girls but to inspire them to believe that they can indeed pursue a career in technology.

Best we can tell, those guys never really do much of anything. Whew — sorry about that. Most would agree that a modern 32 or 64 bit machine is a pretty complicated piece of equipment. While it is easy to buy the parts of a modern PC - motherboard, graphics card and processor - the sheer complexity would defeat any attempt to build one starting with electronic components such as resistors, capacitors and chips. April Fool’s Day has come and gone, and long are the day when the whoopee cushion set the standard for the day’s joke.

Now, tech companies are fooling with us right and left, and Google’s joke on Friday was an in-depth video explaining its new venture, Gmail Motion. The new email service would allow you to control Gmail with your body. However, one team of hackers at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies wanted to take this concept and make it into a reality. What better way to make this gesture-based idea into a working project than with the Microsoft Kinect sensor?

The team used the sensor along with some software they had previously built for different projects, and created a video showing Gmail Motion in action. Gmail’s product manager Paul McDonald jokingly showed us how to open an email; reply by pointing backwards; and send by “licking” a stamp and placing it down on your right knee. Headache. Lamp. She had just started ninth grade–a brand-new baby high-schooler, while he was looking down from the exalted vantage point of his junior year.

Glancing over his shoulder to make sure that she wasn’t lurking around the corner, he added, “I’m worried about her.” “Okaaay,” I said. In an ominous tone, he said, “She’s hanging out with the wrong crowd at school.” I quirked an eyebrow at my worried son. “The wrong crowd?” “Yeah Mom. Oh, the horror, the horror! I almost laughed.
