Tate Debate: When is a craft an art? The V&A and the Crafts Council have a joint exhibition celebrating contemporary craft, The Power of Making; artist Grayson Perry has just curated a show at the British Museum, The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman; and Tacita Dean’s FILM for this year’s Unilever Series engages directly with the tactile skills and crafts of making moving images through film. It’s not a new question, the boundaries between craft and art have long been contested.
But with the explosion of interest in craft, from the Make Do and Mend craze, the new cool of the Women’s Institute and graffiti knitting to artists’ (such as Ai Weiwei) connection with traditional skills and Richard Sennet’s collection of essays The Craftsman gaining interest and coverage, it seems to be the time to talk about it. So what defines an artist or a craft maker, or even divides an artist from a craft maker?

I once heard a gallery owner say that the difference between an art object and a craft object is $3000. The American Craft Council’s director Carmine Branagan says that the discussion is unimportant, that the craft/art debate is one of craftspeople talking to themselves, about issues that do not matter at all to the general public – they do not care about this particular debate.

For Jeremy Frey, of Maine’s Passamaquoddy Indian tribe, weaving ash baskets is a family tradition. He learned to create baskets from his mother when he was 22. Frey tells people this when they stop at his booth at Native American arts fairs. “When you teach people, they’re more likely to appreciate it,” said Frey.
Today, Frey’s baskets are avidly sought by collectors. Great-granddaughter Theresa Secord continues the family tradition. According to the poll, sponsored by ISRI, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, however, the younger generation may be less "green" than previously believed by many. That poll, conducted through an online survey of over 2,000 U.S. adults, found that younger American adults in the 18-34 age range are significantly less likely to say they always recycle to the tune of 33 percent versus 48 percent of people aged 35 and older. Clearly, more needs to be done both to encourage recycling and better comprehend why younger generations aren’t seeing the energy, environmental, and economic benefits that recycling provides.”
