Meet Walter Pitts, the Homeless Genius Who Revolutionized Artificial Intelligence

He’d been born into a tough family in Prohibition-era Detroit, where his father, a boiler-maker, had no trouble raising his fists to get his way. The neighborhood boys weren’t much better. One afternoon in 1935, they chased him through the streets until he ducked into the local library to hide. The library was familiar ground, where he had taught himself Greek, Latin, logic, and mathematics—better than home, where his father insisted he drop out of school and go to work.

Outside, the world was messy. Not wanting to risk another run-in that night, Pitts stayed hidden until the library closed for the evening. McCulloch was a confident, gray-eyed, wild-bearded, chain-smoking philosopher-poet who lived on whiskey and ice cream and never went to bed before 4 a.m. In 1923, the year that Walter Pitts was born, a 25-year-old Warren McCulloch was also digesting the Principia. Standing face to face, they were an unlikely pair. Suddenly, the clouds broke. NaNoWriMo 2016 Kicks Off Today: Write Your Novel with WordPress – WordPress Tavern. Chicago Performs ’25 Or 6 To 4′ Live – But Keep Your Eye On Their Lead Guitarist Terry Kath

Legendary rock band Chicago are a staple in the rock community. Their music and stage persona have transcended generation after generation. An Antidote to the Age of Anxiety: Alan Watts on Happiness and How to Live with Presence

Indeed, my own New Year’s resolution has been to stop measuring my days by degree of productivity and start experiencing them by degree of presence. But what, exactly, makes that possible? This concept of presence is rooted in Eastern notions of mindfulness — the ability to go through life with crystalline awareness and fully inhabit our experience — largely popularized in the West by British philosopher and writer Alan Watts (January 6, 1915–November 16, 1973), who also gave us this fantastic meditation on the life of purpose. If to enjoy even an enjoyable present we must have the assurance of a happy future, we are “crying for the moon.” We have no such assurance. What keeps us from happiness, Watts argues, is our inability to fully inhabit the present: 3D design technology has just taken another mind-blowing step. Facebook.
