Third Generation Distance Education: The Challenge of New Technology., 1990-Nov. This paper is a response to a presentation by Joseph Pelton at the 15th World Congress on Distance Education (Caracas, Venezuela, November 1990).
The response argues that, while newer technologies will impact on distance education, they will not be the panacea suggested by Pelton. The response also points out that not all "new" technologies are interactive or "two-way": but they will impact on both existing and new distance teaching institutions. However, if interactivity is to be maintained, this will be mainly for courses with relatively low numbers for many developing countries. Print-base courses will remain essential, both for economic and quality reasons. Of teachers and technology - Education. VSTE - Virginia Society for Technology in Education. Future of Technology in Education — A ULCC Event. The False Promise of Classroom Technology. The cover story of Life magazine on Oct. 16 was “U.S.
Schools: They Face a Crisis.” Of course, there’s pretty much always a sense of crisis in education—in fact, the Life story dates from 63 years ago: Oct. 16, 1950—and it isn’t limited to the U.S. Two weeks ago, the U.K. announced it would revamp its curriculum and testing for 16-year-olds yet again, on the basis (yet again) that the previous system wasn’t rigorous enough. Both the American and British school systems could surely do better. The trouble is that the perpetual sense of educational crisis leads to a search for quick fixes—the latest of which is throwing Information Technology at the classroom. For all the complaints Americans have about their schools, other countries have far more reason to worry than we do.

This book, about a newly emerging area of research in instructional technology, has as its title the acronym "CSCL. " Initially, CSCL was chosen as an acronym for Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning. However, some would argue that "collaborative" is often not a descriptive term for what learners do in instructional settings; further, as the field develops, the technology used to support collaboration may not always involve computers, at least not in the direct ways they have been used to support instruction in the past. To avoid getting bogged down in this terminological debate, this book uses CSCL as a designation in its own right, leaving open to interpretation precisely what words it stands for. The authors talk a great deal about the theory underlying their work.
