We didn’t want to form blocks that oppress their environment. Our primary aim was to find an acceptable, proportioned building form, that keeps the relative regulations, and we connected the most optimal number of apartments to this form. The sorrounding buildings and environment inspired the volume of the building. Local value We reacted to the form and volume of the sorrounding buildings observantly and sensitively. The site is on the slope facing to the south, surrounded by the mountain in the north side, and has the good natural environment. This is not a new construction but the renovation project of the old concrete structure house that was built 5 years ago. We add the new floor and flat roofing to extend the floor area. Originally the house was 2 stories (250 sq. m.) with angled roof, and the exterior wall was covered by white tiles. For the exterior wall, we made the 3 layers to make the “depth” on it. 17 meters width and 16 meters depth of the plan is rather large for one family (4 persons).

Bonairestraat Groningen / pvanb architecten. Architects: pvanb architecten Location: Groningen, The Netherlands Client: Lefier StadGroningen Project Year: 2008 Photographs: Courtesy of pvanb architecten The family homes and apartment blocks designed by pvanb architects display brick architecture applied with great care and craftsmanship. They form a tangible translation of the varied residential programme, and continue the brick tradition of the pre-war and post-war tradition in an individual way with simple resources.

The new construction on the Bonairestraat represents the first phase of the restructuring of a block with obsolete architecture from the post-war reconstruction period. It lies in the so-called ‘Indische buurt’, at the interface of the pre-war and post-war city. The design solution adheres closely but naturally to both the urban planning assignment and the architectonic requirements of the context. The idea behind the project is the search for a development distribution that can return to the inhabitants of the highest degree of privacy allowed by a residential unit. The building has been physically split into three different units, where the impression is “to live in a house isolated. ” The units – separated from each other and no walls in common – they are recomposed by the landing of access into a single architecture, a sort of architectural structure, articulated and overlooking LOCATION. * Location to be used only as a reference.
