Make Flexible Circuit Boards Using A 3D Printer. PLA, Nylon, ABS and most common filaments used for 3d printing do not stick to copper well enough to lay down a pattern that can be etched to create a circuit board. A fairly new elastomeric rubber filament is now available that sticks quite well to copper.

It is called Ninjaflex. In fact, it sticks quite well to almost anything including acrylic, blue painters tape, and glass. A circuit board pattern can be drawn in a free program like 123D Design and then extruded to a thin thickness and saved as an STL file. It can then be printed on top of a thin copper clad board or plated conductive fabric: step 1 pic. It can then be etched in the standard way with a Ferric Chloride solution.

The circuit board shown was printed at standard breadboard and perfboard spacing of traces at .1" centers. If you want a thin and light circuit, this layout works well. Acetone has been used for some time to treat ABS parts, either by polishing, vapor smoothing, or even using it to stick parts together. Likewise Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) has been used to the same effect with ABS. We found Tetrahydrofuran (THF) to be the best option in our assessment, but be warned that there are serious safety concerns to working with THF.

This post received a lot of attention, and a number of people have rightly brought up concerns with the safety of interacting with THF. This post describes a procedure that CAN be done, but for which there are obvious safety concerns. Please read the Safety section in detail, read the MSDS (link provided), and be responsible. Background We first found and started experimenting with THF at the beginning of April. Why Would I Want to do This? THF Safety You can read more about THF on its Wikipedia page. Do your homework, read the MSDS (PDF Direct Link), and act responsibly. Making your PLA prints FLEXIBLE V2 (and ABS smoothing!) by nickdisney. Building an Acetone Vapor Bath for Smoothing 3D-Printed Parts | Sink Hacks.

Acetone vapor treated part and untreated part Using an acetone vapor bath to treat ABS 3D-printed parts is an extremely effective (and only moderately dangerous) way to create parts with a shiny, smooth finish. Applying acetone with a brush, or submerging a model in a liquid acetone bath, generally results in a part that has had its detail completely melted away. Using acetone vapor helps preserve detail while giving a smooth and shiny finish. The boiling point of acetone is 132.8°F, but it will evaporate at room temperature. There have been experiments using acetone vapor at room temperature, but they can take up to 40 minutes to smooth a part. Using a boiling acetone vapor process can smooth a part in less than 10 seconds! Borrowing a technique from a moonshiner I’d met, I used a water bath to keep the acetone at a steady 140°F. Drawer Slide CNC Machine for under $200 Like many of us interested in this hobby, I wanted my own machine.

But I didn’t want to dive into it, spend $2k plus and have a large paperweight out in my shop. The idea was born for a simple, cheap, somewhat accurate CNC machine that I could modify as I gained knowledge (and funds). The first step in the process was deciding what hardware I was going to use. I decided on the TB6560-3 axis driver bought off eBay for $22.00/free shipping. For stepper motors, I found a lot of 5 on eBay for $10.00/free shipping. The spindle is probably the most important part of the machine. There are a lot of misc hardware pieces need to build this machine, but most of which can be found at your local Lowes, Home Depot or local hardware store.

Also, you will need some sort of software(and obviously a computer) to run the machine and to do drawings. ****EDIT**** I forgot to mention what I would do with the laser cutter if I were to win! Keep reading for a total overview of all the associated CNC stepper motor controller problems experienced and the reasons for the problems, or jump down the page to get straight to the Step-by-Step guide on how I fixed the board . This stepper motor controller board fix may look complicated, but with a little explanation and with the help of pictures, the changes should be relatively quick and simple for most people.

The board fix should also assist people using similar Chinese made stepper motor controllers (3 axis, 4 axis and 5 axis boards) for 3D printer, laser cutter, plasma cutter and plotter applications. I have tried to keep this guide as simple as possible so people with little electronics or CNC experience do not get discouraged. The Initial Problem 1. 2.
