Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by impairments in social interaction, behavior, and communication.

A Systematic Review of Early Intensive Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders

Although once considered untreatable, findings published by Lovaas1 in 1987 suggested that with intensive intervention using applied behavioral analysis, some children may experience a degree of improvement. That report, in which “recovery” of just less than 50% of a subgroup of young children who were receiving intensive intervention was described, initiated a growing body of research. There continues to be no global consensus on what treatment strategies are most effective for patients with ASDs, although it is clear that chronic management is often necessary to maximize independence and quality of life. Children frequently receive combinations of interventions that may include behavioral, educational, and medical therapies as well as allied health and complementary approaches.

For many children, behavioral interventions form the cornerstone of their treatment. Executive and Memory Function in Adolescents Born Very Preterm. Identification and Evaluation of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders

Management of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders. The term autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has been used to include the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR)1 diagnostic categories autistic disorder, Asperger disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder–not otherwise specified.2 Recent estimates of the prevalence of ASDs are in the range of 6.5 to 6.6 per 1000, and pediatricians, therefore, are likely to care for children and adolescents with these diagnoses.3–5 In the companion document to this clinical report,2 the American Academy of Pediatrics has summarized pertinent background information on ASDs and emphasized the importance of surveillance and screening as well as other potential physician roles in the diagnostic process.

ASDs, similar to other neurodevelopmental disabilities, are generally not “curable,” and chronic management is required. Optimization of medical care is also likely to have a positive impact on habilitative progress and quality of life. Seizures. Nature of Auditory Processing Disorder in Children

Abstract OBJECTIVE: We tested the specific hypothesis that the presentation of auditory processing disorder (APD) is related to a sensory processing deficit. METHODS: Randomly chosen, 6- to 11-year-old children with normal hearing (N = 1469) were tested in schools in 4 regional centers across the United Kingdom. RESULTS: AP improved with age. CONCLUSIONS: Presenting symptoms of APD were largely unrelated to auditory sensory processing. Key Words: Some children with normal hearing and listening problems are diagnosed as having APD. We compared children's cognition and AP skills with caregiver's evaluations of their listening and communication. The term APD was first used at the 1974 meeting of the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (R.W. Population Data Collection Analysis. Recommendations for Evaluation and Treatment of Common Gastrointestinal Problems in Children With ASDs. Differential Diagnosis Chronic diarrhea occurs when loose stools persist for 2 weeks or longer, with or without an increase in stool frequency.

Recommendations for Evaluation and Treatment of Common Gastrointestinal Problems in Children With ASDs

Most episodes of acute diarrhea resolve within a week's time and are frequently caused by self-limited infections. In contrast, the causes of chronic diarrhea are generally different and include more noninfectious causes than for acute diarrhea. In the US general pediatric population, the most common causes of chronic diarrhea are functional disorders, malabsorption syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn disease or ulcerative colitis), and chronic infections.15 The causes of diarrhea in children on the autism spectrum are likely the same as in children without ASDs, and the differential diagnosis should be approached with similar rigor. PEDIATRICS (ISSN Numbers: Print, 0031-4005; Online, 1098-4275). Published in the public domain by the American Academy of Pediatrics.Speech and language development is a useful indicator of a child's overall development and cognitive ability and is related to school success. Identification of children at risk for developmental delay or related problems may lead to intervention services and family assistance at a young age, when the chances for improvement are best.

PURPOSE. METHODS. RESULTS. The performance characteristics of evaluation techniques that take ≤10 minutes to administer were described in 24 studies relevant to screening.
