I found so much visual inspiration at Baartman Art Gallery, I highly recommend to visit it and check out the different collections created by Hendrik Arie Baartman. I have only selected some of them but you will find a great variety of digitalized and computational art, very interesting. "Hendrik Arie Baartman transforms basic shapes and colors into powerful compositions that depict light, shape, power, and mechanized form.
The disparate parts of Baartman’s work are suspended between ground and foreground. His subject matter is vague, but familiar. The iconography is reminiscent of primitive, or ancient markings, yet seen through the scope of a surrealist lens. But the work feels contemporary, with a reductive palette that places the work in its own realm. Baartman’s work seems to speak about enlightenment through an aesthetic experience. Through many months of delicate preparations and negotiations by my brother Malik, our fixer Taka-san, and myself, we became the only westerners ever to be granted this kind of access to that closed world. With a mix of photography, film, writing and graphic design, I try to share not only their extremely complex relationship to Japanese society, and also to show the personal struggle that each family member faces: being forced to live in two different worlds at the same time; worlds that often have conflicting morals and values… It turns out not to be a simple ‘black’ versus ‘white’ relationship, but most definitely one with many shades of grey. MilkWeed: Inspiratu. Last week I was creatively constipated. Sorry to be crass but that’s exactly how it can feel, no? When this happens I embark on a now-steady routine to get things moving again, and usually in this order: suddenly feel grouchy upon blockage setting in, sulk, nap, evaluate my future as a working creative, panic, consult my heroes, reconnect to the collective flow, ready to go. Seeing as this column coincided with said blockage, I thought I’d share some of my tried and true go-to sources of inspiration.
