EU policies still undermining the fight against poverty. 07/11/2011 at 4:45 pm EU policies are continuing to undermine rights in developing countries, says a new report, published by the confederation of European development NGOs, CONCORD, of which Dóchas is the Irish member.
The report, entitled ‘Spotlight on EU Policy Coherence for Development’ launched today shows that much of the good work being done by EU aid is undone by other EU policies. The report shows that 925 million people went hungry in 2010 – that’s almost 1 out of every 7 people on the planet – while one third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted.
EU "External Action" website. OECD urges EU to spell out its aid message. The EU needs to develop a more cohesive approach to development aid and speak consistently with a unified voice or risk its influence and impact weakening, a major assessment of its aid programme has claimed.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) peer review on Tuesday also warned of the strong possibility that the EU will miss its target of boosting collective aid to 0.7% of gross national income by 2015 because of financial pressures. Greece and Portugal, most dramatically, slashed their aid budgets by more than 30% last year as the value of OECD aid in 2011 dropped for the first time in 15 years.
