BIM+ - New guide to soft landings and government soft landings launched. BSRIA has published a guide to explain to construction companies how they can comply with government requirements for “government soft landings” - the handover process that helps facilities managers to get the most out of the building’s design. Compliance will become mandatory next year for contractors and consultants on projects procured by central government. The government soft landing (GSL) process is intended to ensure that the BIM data compiled by the project team during the construction phase is fully exploited by the owner’s engineers. The project team is therefore expected to use the model to provide “a fully populated asset dataset” that can be input into computer-aided FM systems. The general aim of the GSL process is to promote a “culture of collaboration” between the project team and the end users through stakeholder workshops and design reviews.

But there are some crucial differences between BSRIA's Soft Landings and those of GSL. . ● Asset registers must be supplied. BSRIA Soft Landings guidance to download. BSRIA has published a range of free guidance (unless stated otherwise) to help companies understand the Soft Landings process an implement it successfully for new and refurbished buildings: Soft Landings and Government Soft Landings ** New for 2015 ** Provides an overview of the Government Soft Landings (GSL) policy and a comparison with the BSRIA Soft Landings Framework (BG 54/2014). Soft Landings Core Principles The package of principles that should be adopted in their entirety in order for a construction project to be deemed a true Soft Landings project.

Soft Landings Framework The Soft Landings Framework includes all the procedures for applying Soft Landings, plus checklists and generic workplans. How to Procure Soft Landings (paid for guide - links to BSRIA Bookshop) Written primarily to help public and private sector clients and main contractors procure Soft Landings services from their construction supply chains. PAS 1192-2:2013 - Specification for information management for the capital/delivery phase of construction projects using building information modelling.

This document provides information on the management of data produced within a BIM project environment, and supplements the processes and procedures contained in BS 1192:2007. PAS1192-2 Specification for information management for the capital/delivery phase of construction projects using Building Information Modelling. The purpose of the PAS is to support the objective to achieve BIM maturity Level 2 by specifying requirements for this level, setting set out the framework for collaborative working on BIM enabled projects and providing specific guidance for the information management requirements associated with projects delivered using BIM. The requirements within the PAS build on the existing code of practice for the collaborative production of architectural, engineering and construction information, defined within BS 1192:2007.

The PAS describes the shared use of individually authored models in a Common Data Environment (CDE), being a single source of information for any given project, used to collect, manage and disseminate all relevant approved project documents for multi-disciplinary teams. NBS has been awarded a Government contract, from the BIM Task Group in association with Innovate UK, to undertake the development of a Toolkit for Building Information Modelling (BIM). Developed by our renowned NBS software developers, the finished BIM Toolkit will be accessible online, offering users a Digital Plan of Work tool and a new unified classification system, creating much-needed synergy in building projects. This Toolkit will provide step-by-step support to define, manage and validate responsibility for information development and delivery at each stage of the asset lifecycle, in preparation for the Government-mandated use of Level 2 BIM on all public sector projects by 2016.

The Toolkit is being developed as a free-to-use tool for our industry, with the first roll-out of this remarkable new digital tool in April 2015. Level 2 BIM comprises a number of components, as defined by the BIM Task Group, with many of the standards and guidance documents already developed. BIM+ - NBS to unveil Digital Toolkit at regional roadshow events. The BIM world is to get an early preview of the NBS Digital Toolkit for Level 2 BIM projects, due for launch this April, at a series of “roadshow” events at the eight regional BIM Hubs in February and March. In addition, NBS will be holding a series of webinars in late February to introduce the system to a wide audience.

The Digital Toolkit is a free-to-use online service that allows BIM model data to be uploaded, then checked to ensure it has right level of geometric detail and technical information. The project will deliver the Digital Plan of Work, one of the final pieces in the suite of standards and systems that make up the government’s definition of Level 2 BIM. The south-east and London BIM hubs, chaired by CIC regional BIM champions John Eynon FCIOB and David Miller RIBA of David Miller Architects, are collaborating on a combined event.

Eynon told BIM+: “They showed us a presentation of how the tool works and what it could do – it looks very positive.

This post is about BIM Steps, those micro changes needed to implement Building Information Modelling within an organisation and then - by osmosis - throughout the whole industry. But before we introduce BIM Steps and in response to feedback received, I’ll partially revisit the BIM Stages topic (Episode 8) in an effort to invite more discussion.

BIM Adoption: Stages and Steps The adoption of BIM by an organisation will not happen unintentionally and definitely not in a single giant leap. In fact, it will be deployed through intentional decisions passing through major milestones referred to as BIM Stages. These stages – if well defined - are very useful to understand BIM concepts and visions but are - on their own - not usable in implementation.

Further subdivisions are needed: smaller incremental changes that each organisation can make to reach each major Stage, mature within it and then attempt to reach another. But why do we need to define stages to start with? Need for BIM Stages. BIM ThinkSpace: Understanding BIM through DIKUW. General Contractors | Tekla. Tekla software supports your construction coordination, quantity take-off, cost estimation, scheduling and sequencing.

The constructible building information is accurate, consistent and always up-to-date. Tekla software helps contractors manage risk and plan for successful construction projects. If you detect and avoid problems before construction begins, you minimise expensive delays and rework. Design insight and project predictability from preconstruction to execution delivers more effective planning, coordination and control. With Tekla, you can create information-rich models, regardless of the file size or complexity, and combine these with models from many other authoring tools. The software also includes tools for project review and constructability analysis.
