Red Circle Tea

http://www.redcircletea.com/blog/ That’s what the sign read. VACATION. Again? What’s with the no dates of departure and re-opening?

I finally finished a full inventory of my tea last week. The result? Not enough! It’s been a couple of winters since I’ve been to Asia, so I definitely need to re-stock on my next trip. http://www.myteastories.com/

Sharing My Cup of Tea

The Sip Tip

I must admit to a bit of a bloated ego when I placed my last order for Japanese tea. I was ordering matcha, and having just gotten some new teabowls, I decided it was time to replace my more worn, and cracking chasen. I had a decision to make, 100 prong or 80 prong. My previous chasen was 100 prong, and while quite big it was very easy to use. http://www.thesiptip.com/

Something Smuggled In

http://smuggled-in.blogspot.com/ This piece has been bouncing around my brain for quite a while now; for better or worse, I think it's time. In general, the subject is a somewhat disconcerting phenomenon I've seen repeatedly with tea hobbyists both in real life and online, as well as sometimes in my own approach to tea--the pitfalls of experience. The tea world is a fascinating one for countless reasons, and one aspect I've found continually intriguing as the years pass by is the relationship between the rapid increase in the availability and variety of better quality tea and the rapid increase in tea information and discussion available to the non-Asian world. Both increases, I think it's safe to say, have been largely facilitated by the the internet--e-commerce and information exchange/blog/forum advancements have simultaneously occurred across all corners of the online world and the tea industry has developed accordingly.
A post over at TeaChat lead me to this article on “Exposure and risk assessment for aluminum and heavy metals in Puerh tea” from the journal Science of the Total Environment . It looks like a very reputable journal (an impact factor of 3.190 is very good) and the bottom line of the abstract says: However, probabilistic estimation of carcinogenic risk shows that the 95th percentile carcinogenic rate of arsenic in Puerh tea approaches the accepted risk level of 10 − 4 for the highest exposure group. Therefore, the arsenic in Puerh tea is of concern.

Tpots

I am off to plant some seeds of Cha Dao in Siberia. It is going to be amazing. If any of you live in the region, I will be teaching in Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Irkutsk and Abekan. We have started a new tea of the month club to fund our center/school, outings and courses as well as all our publications including The Leaf, which should get a jumpstart again this year:

Since the health benefits of tea is in the news lately, we should take a closer look at GABA tea , one of the "secrets" of the tea world. This little-known type of tea is specially processed to increase the levels of GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid) - an important amino acid responsible for inhibiting neuron activity in the brain. GABA is used as a natural tranquilizer, and apparantly has many health benefits.
