About Domes: Sacred Geometry - Pacific Domes, Inc

Buckminster Fuller–inventor, architect, engineer, mathematician, poet and cosmologist was one of the most enlightened mystics of the last century. Fuller was truly a man ahead of his time. His lifelong goal was the development of what he called “Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science” – the attempt to anticipate and solve humanity’s major problems through the highest technology by providing “more and more life support for everybody, with less and less resources.” Bucky was an expert at observing nature and extrapolating its fundamental geometry. The Pythagorean schools and their knowledge of the “music of the spheres” are the foundation of inspiration for all of the famous geometers that followed from Plato to Kepler.

Imagine yourself living in a highly structured space replicating the fundamental geometry of creation—the same geometry at the root of heavenly spheres and of the molecules of your body. The dome resembles the dome created in the "Dome Sweet Dome" math Project Idea, but we used straws instead of newspaper, a different assembly process, and threw in some duct tape customization for visual effect. A model dome like this can be made in any size (as long as you figure out the relative lengths of the struts). This one is pretty big! Getting it in the car was definitely a challenge. The dome didn't weather its time squooshed in the trunk very well—a reminder that inexpensive plastic straws bend and/or crack under too much stress. Building the dome was a great hands-on math exploration project, but it took a good bit of time to work through all the necessary steps to prepare the struts for assembly.

A Geodesic Dome Some years ago I built a geodesic dome out of ½ inch galvanized steel electrical conduit, to serve as an aviary for chickens and small parrots.

I wrote a computer program to calculate the proper lengths of steel tubing, and draw the diagram shown below: The dome is made from three different lengths of tubing. I used colored stickers on the tubes to mark the different lengths -- red for the long ones, violet for the medium lengths, and green for the short ones. You can see those colors in the drawing. The ends of the tubes are smashed flat with a hammer, and then holes are drilled in the flat ends for a bolt to go through to connect up to six of the tubes together. For this project, something a little more modest in size is required. For the first attempt at a smaller dome, I used bamboo kebab skewers and gumdrops.

A geodesic dome is a dome formed by joining triangles together. You can build a giant geodesic dome out of newspaper. First, gather some friends or family members to help you.
