The End of the Culture 2.0 Crusade?. Scanblog : ECHO vague 2.

The story BCG offered me $16,000 not to tell. The city was strange and the society was unnerving, but what disturbed me most about my Dubai experience was my job as a business consultant for the Boston Consulting Group. I really had no idea what to expect, going in. In my mind, consulting was about answering business questions through analysis.

It was supposed to be Excel sheets and models, sifting through data to discover profit and loss, and helping clients make decisions that would add the most value for themselves, and by extension, society. It was worrisome to enter a new job without any guarantee that I would be qualified. I assumed BCG would train me, and that as it had been with MIT, intelligence and hard work would prove sufficient. Still, I wondered what I would do if for some reason it turned out that I couldn’t get my head around the analysis? The first clue that my mental picture of consulting was off came with “training” in Munich. I quickly found out why so little had been invested in developing my Excel-craft.

Peut-on modéliser l’innovation.

Change by Design - IDEO. Tim Brown, CEO of IDEO, shows how the techniques and strategies of design belong at every level of business. The myth of innovation is that brilliant ideas leap fully formed from the minds of geniuses. The reality is that most innovations come from a process of rigorous examination through which great ideas are identified and developed before being realized as new offerings and capabilities. This book introduces design thinking, the collaborative process by which the designer’s sensibilities and methods are employed to match people’s needs with what is technically feasible and a viable business strategy. In short, design thinking converts need into demand. It’s a human-centered approach to problem solving that helps people and organizations become more innovative and creative.

Design thinking is not just applicable to so-called creative industries or people who work in the design field. Each day, the physical capabilities that technology gives us is incredible, and we're not just talking about texting friends at lightening pace, or the ability to see our energy consumption in real time. Since the discussion either happen with or is dominated by technical people, this is not surprising. But web 2.0 is different. The assessment about the relevance and usefulness of a community must be left to individuals in government.

Shoot me up, Scotty. Okay, I couldn't resist on the title which is lifted from the BusinessWeek review of Nicholas Carr's new book, The Shallows. This book was also just reviewed in the NYTimes.

The premise is clear enough. Our digital habits are sapping our ability to pay attention long enough to digest or understand many things, possibly have empathy of other human beings and as for retaining facts...forget about it.Oh, and did I mention that its causing us to read fewer books? Slightly ironic as I have not read The Shallows and feel I have a built-in excuse. It has a compelling argument. But I learned not to watch TV for more than an hour. Still, I feel the effects.

A few months ago I wrote a series on the innovative and award winning approach Booz Allen is taking to enhance enterprise collaboration and engagement (see Implementing Enterprise 2.0 at Booz Allen: The Series). Recently, I spoke again with Walton Smith, the Program Manager for Booz Allen’s information sharing efforts and the lead for the Government 2.0 client practice.

Walton said that the first version of Hello, the collaboration platform, covered the exchange and archiving of tacit knowledge. Now they wanted to expand it to incorporate document management in an integrated and collaborative manner. Booz Allen selected SharePoint for the document management application as 90% of their clients used it and they already had an enterprise license. To extend the collaborative capabilities they made use of a number of third party tools including MindTouch and some other open source offerings.
