How to Discourage Artists in the Church

Their faith in Christ seems odd to many of their friends in the artistic community—almost as odd as their calling as artists seems to some of their friends at church. Yet Christians called to draw, paint, sculpt, sing, act, dance, and play music have extraordinary opportunities to honor God in their daily work and to bear witness to the grace, beauty, and truth of the gospel. How can pastors (and churches) encourage Christians with artistic gifts in their dual calling as Christian artists? As a pastor and college president, I have made a sad discovery: the arts are not always affirmed in the life of the local church. Museum of Biblical Art. Curated by the staff of the Museum of Biblical Art, New York, NY. Bible Portrait Gallery: Bible in English, 1611. London: Robert Barker, 1611 Produced by a committee of fifty-odd scholars who labored for about seven years at the special commandment of James I, the Bible known today as the King James Version was first published in 1611.

It originated in the King’s desire to bring religious unity to his realm and was conceived as a revision of the so-called Bishops’ Bible released during the reign of his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth, in 1568. It remained the most beloved English translation of the Bible for more than 300 years. The general title page of the King James Bible is a beautiful engraving designed and executed by the Flemish artist Cornelis Boel (c1576-c1621). Artspeak: Restore.

While Highrock North Shore was planning their church launch a little over a year ago, it became clear that artists would play a big role in the development of the community.

Artspeak: Restore

Last year, a group of painters, musicians, designers, and writers from the church gathered in kitchens and living rooms. They talked about style. They talked about process and projects and techniques. A Novel Approach to Art [jacob] I have wanted, from my first round blogging for TheoCult, to write a post about art—good art versus bad art, the pratfalls of “Christian art,” the tension of being a “Christian artist,” and so on—yet not without some apprehension.

A Novel Approach to Art [jacob]

Partly, of course, this is because I would by no means be the first person to blog on this subject on TheoCult (e.g., this, or this, or this) or anywhere for that matter. And who wants to read different people all ramble on about the same thing? What could I possibly add to this discourse that has not already been more eloquently stated? Modern Reformation - Articles. "Modern art contradicts most of our assumptions about art.

Modern Reformation - Articles

It isn't about heroes to emulate and challenge us, relaxing scenes with happy trees and quaint cottages to comfort us, outrageous images that entertain or scandalize us, or even expressions of an artist's 'worldview.'" On my last visit to New York, I went to the Museum of Modern Art to see The Scream, a little drawing in pastel by Edvard Munch on loan from a private collector. It is one of four versions that the artist made of the famous subject: a genderless figure, standing on a bridge, holding its hairless head and screaming.

Big hair. Modern Reformation Conversations–Paul On The Road To MoMA (Part 1) It’s a pretty big anachronism, but it’s an interesting question—if Paul went to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, what would he think? How would he interact with Kerstin Brätsch’s Matchpoint? What would he have to say about Cheyney Thompson’s Chronochrome Set 10?

How would Christians today interpret Alfredo Jaar’s Lament of the Images or Rachel Harrison’s Alexander the Great? Americans tend to be somewhat befuddled when it comes to art—we understand it as an outlet for creativity (Pinterest!) And readily assent to its therapeutic value, but certain art critics would question our ability to understand and dialogue with modern art on its own terms. There’s a reason for this difference (which, for brevity’s sake, I won’t go into here), and it’s a good reason—the question that we want to discuss is, ‘What are Christians to do with modern art?’ P.S.
