I am senior lecturer in English at the University of Wolverhampton and have been an advocate for the past few years of teaching using blended learning - integrating online learning activities alongside face-to-face teaching. Two of my courses on Victorian literature feature a number of assessed online discussion forum activities. They get 100% participation - much of it enthusiastic. Online learning spaces are neutral - just like a 'real' classroom is.

It's what you do in them that matters. I use face-to-face classes as a spur to take our study of any given topic further online, thus extending it into areas of reflection and research not possible within the constraints of a seminar discussion. The important question to ask regarding e-learning is: What does an online space make possible by way of teaching that my class couldn't do face-to-face?

The (In)Direct Benefits of Blogging and Twitter for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education - Chasing Dragons. A couple of months ago I was asked to make a short presentation at Newcastle University about how my use of blogging and twitter have contributed to my teaching. In some respects this was a difficult assignment. While blogging and twitter offer possibilities for communication, distribution of materials, and even assessment,I have not used either platform directly for learning and teaching.

My initial objectives for these platforms had been in terms of promoting my research and my own research profile. Yet, the more I thought about, the more I realised that this distinction between my online research activities and teaching and learning was not sustainable. Reviewing Bottlenose On Saturday I discovered the Bottlenose service and quickly realised how it can enhance my Twitter, Facebook and other channels to enable me to quickly find content of interest to me.

Within a few minutes of using the service I found myself agreeing with Mashable that “Bottlenose is a Game Changer for Social Media Consumption” and ReadWriteWeb that the service is “More intelligent than basic consumer dashboards like TweetDeck and HootSuite“. I came across Bottlenose from a tweet posted by @suebecks. I found that I had previously registered for the service but hadn’t yet received an activation code. However since Bottleneck have stated that “if you happen to have a Klout score over 30, you can register and gain access straight away ” and my Klout rating is 48 I was able to use the service straight away.
