On a beautiful spring day in the heart of east Berlin, eight fruit trees are planted in Görlitzer park. The trees, mainly apples but also some plums and pears, were carefully laid into the ground. The project, ‘I heart Görli’, was organised by a group of locals with similar concerns and a shared desire to act. It started last year when they began planting trees in this same park.

Prologue (facultatif) Un soir de la fin janvier, dans le cadre des jeudis en questions –un cycle de conférences-débats mensuels et militants dans le voisinage de Marcillac– le café de Pruines recevait la visite de Linnéa Lindstroem pour parler de permaculture. On a compté entre 70 et 80 participants, ce qui était pour le moins inattendu pour un thème si spécialisé et pour une contrée si reculée. Pour moi, c’est la preuve que ça bouge en France du côté de la permaculture et de la transition. Dans le débat qui a suivi la présentation, une question m’a particulièrement interpellé, à laquelle ni l’intervenante ni nous autres pauvres aspirants permaculteurs n’avons pu apporter de réponse entièrement satisfaisante. Grossièrement, la question se résumait à : “peut-on vivre de la permaculture ?”

Permaculture works with nature to make a better world for all. By observing the natural world we can see a set of principles at work. Permaculture design uses these principles to develop integrated systems that provide for our needs of food, shelter, energy and community in ways that are healthy and efficient.
Many advanced civilizations vanished because they did not take care of their soil. This film is about a new, progressive, and advanced practice of agriculture, that will regenerate the soil. With Regenerative Agriculture we create healthier food, build communities, and most importantly increase the top soil. Top soil, the skin of the earth, is where the life of the plant exists, and that is where our food comes from. Top soil sequesters CO2, turning a poison (in atmosphere) to food. According to many scientists, ranchers, and environmentalists worldwide, if we increase the top soil by 1.6%, the top soil sequesters so much CO2 that the amount of CO2 in atmosphere goes back to the amount before the industrial revolution in less than 10 years.

Much of what you’ll find here falls into a few major categories: general resources on permaculture and ecological design, information on my courses and upcoming events, and my musings and articles on several themes. One of those themes is how agriculture has shaped human culture into an unsustainable form that permaculture can improve. I also am on a campaign to find the opportunities in energy descent and Peak Oil, ideas that at first encounter can be terrifying and often send people into a doomer spiral. There are many ways to respond to crisis that fall between “don’t worry, be happy” and “we’re all gonna die,” and permaculture provides useful tools for exploring that large middle arena. Thoughts on other topics are in blog form or in the articles linked to the right. Writing, teaching, and working on our marvelous place in Sonoma County are my current obsessions.

Nos poules Certains d’entre vous se lassent peut être des nombreux articles parus sur ce blog concernant le végétarisme ou le veganisme, et jusqu’à il y a peu je ne comprenais pas vraiment pourquoi je m’intéresse autant à ce sujet. Mais je tiens peut être une piste, que je vous livre ici. Tout d’abord, un des problèmes qu’il faut affronter pour parler aux vegans, c’est la multiplicité des approches, regroupée sous une même bannière. On peut distinguer plusieurs types de vegans : Les vegans ne sont pas dûpes, et ils savent que l’on doit tuer pour vivre, ou dans une formule qui les mettra plus à l’aise, des être vivants doivent mourir pour que l’on puisse vivre, aussi on trouve des définitions intermédiaires :
