Putin Luring Ukraine in First Ruble Debt as Dollar Sale Pulled : Ukraine News by UNIAN

Ukraine may sell ruble debt for the first time as Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s government builds ties with former Soviet states and promotes its currency as a regional alternative to the dollar. Officials from Ukraine’s finance ministry met Russian counterparts twice to discuss a ruble bond, Ukraine’s Deputy Economy Minister Valery Muntiyan said in a July 23 interview in Kiev, without specifying how much debt the government may sell. Ukraine abandoned a $2 billion issue this month as international investors demanded higher yields than the government was willing to pay, according to a July 15 finance ministry statement.

Among the many anniversaries of world events marked in 2009, NATO’s founding 60 years ago stands out. At the start of the cold war, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was built to provide for the external as well as internal security of its member states. By pooling West European defense efforts, it put an end to intra-European wars. http://carnegieeurope.eu/publications/?fa=24039

Russia to discuss gas price reduction for Ukraine - Putin | Top

http://www.en.rian.ru/business/20100325/158313770.html Russia and Ukraine will discuss a possible reduction in the price that Kiev pays for Russian gas, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Thursday. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who came to power in February after narrowly winning a presidential runoff against then premier Yulia Tymoshenko, has been seeking to revise a long-term gas deal signed by Tymoshenko and Putin in early 2009. "We agreed that there are no topics closed to discussion," Putin told journalists after talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Mykola Azarov in the Moscow Region.

At the same time, Kommersant Ukraina reported referring to its sources at the Russian Gazprom, the parties failed to reach agreement on anything specific. In Moscow the Ukrainian delegation was told that the talk about gas price reduction would become possible only on condition Ukraine buys at least 52 billion cubic meters, as contracted. Serhiy Tulub, member of Verkhovna Rada's committee for the fuel and energy complex, says that Ukraine may agree to a greater volume of gas purchase if receives from Russia the right to re-export. http://www.nrcu.gov.ua/index.php?id=148&listid=114734

Lytvyn said that he had held relevant consultations with the Speaker of the State Duma Boris Gryzlov. "It is absolutely possible, provided that all documents arrive to the Verkhovna Rada promptly. After all, we need to adopt the budget with the new price factor taken into account, in connection with the agreements signed in Kharkiv," he emphasized.
