Design For Living. How about some respect for interior decorators?

Design For Living

Writing in The Spectator a few weeks ago, Ed Vaizey praised the Prime Minister for hosting a party at No. 10 during London Fashion Week to honour the contribution that particular industry makes in swelling Britain’s coffers. While I couldn’t be happier that the government appreciates the clothing trade’s input, one can’t help noticing that a comparable industry is rarely given any recognition. I mean of course the decorating trade. The glamorous tip of the fashion business iceberg is obviously the catwalk shows and collections by designers. These are made possible by a vast network of highly, and often very poorly, paid individuals from across the globe.

By comparison, the building and construction trade, in which the leading interior designers are equivalent to fashion’s supremos, contributes a rather heftier £81 billion to our national output. Geoform Modular Loungers - Floorscape Can Be Expanded to Form a Dynamic Surface for Sitting

Interestingly, this unusual piece of furniture offers the opportunity for a sitter to get cozy in nearly any position he should choose. Dave Pickett's design was intended to furnish Cleveland's Museum of Contemporary Art. It isn't clear whether the piece would be situated in an exhibition hall or in a more casual lounging area. Either way, the idiosyncratic arrangement can adapt to any space because it functions brilliantly as a stand-alone setup in the middle of a room. Floorscape is constructed of an assortment of some similar and some dissimilar units that vary in height and slope but maintain the same triangular cushions on top of their metal frames.

Posh Cardboard Seating - The Re-PLY Chair by Dan Goldstein is a Eco-Firned. Beams Chair by Eric & Johnny Design Studio. Posted on February 24, 2013 by Themethodcase The Beams Chair is a lightweight wooden armchair inspired by the H-beam structure of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Beams Chair by Eric & Johnny Design Studio

The H-Beam structure is derived and used as a main design element in the Beams Chair, which shows the beauty of such construction. The main frame of the Chair is composed of two kinds of thin wood panel:multiplex and plywood. The two wood panels are combined together in such a way so as to offer directional perpendicular wooden structures and to create the H-Beam structure in the Chair. By such inventive arrangement of the wood panel, the specific H-beam structure is built up and an extraordinary stability of the Chair is ensured. The Chair is made of three different kinds of wood, bent plywood, multiplex and aircraft plywood. The strength of the structure of the plywood and multiplex thin sheets is quite strong in one direction, while relatively weak in other direction.

Urban Camping by Import.Export architecture, Belgium

Belgian architects import.export architects have created a mobile multi-storey structure that allows people to camp in urban areas. The structure is made out off steel and supports four platforms on which tents can be pitched. Camping is defined as ‘getting away from an urban area, and enjoying nature, spending one or more nights on a location’. As such, the phrase Urban Camping contradicts itself.import.export ARCHITECTURE (Oscar Rommens en Joris Van Reusel, architecten) designed a new type of ‘small scale’ urban camping. The chair's back looks just like a collar, and like the collar of your favorite overcoat, it can be folded up or down for comfort. Even the ties that hold the 'Coat Chair' together take inspiration from menswear; rather than bolts or more industrial fasteners, this seat is held together with large die-cast chrome zinc cufflinks. Implications - One of the best ways a company can instantly create a buzz about their product is by significantly altering the design of a time-tested product.

By presenting an old product in a new packaging, the company shows the willingness to avoid conventional wisdom in favor of originality and innovation. This will attract consumers seeking novelty, as well as those who want to appear as though they are on the forefront of emerging design movements. Random Design Inspiration

Some are intangible items like a great quote or the flash of a smile, a cloud formation or beautiful sunset. Others are items I come across in my design process that I save pictures of and keep them on my board to remind me of how many truly fantastic ideas there are out there. Some I would never incorporate into my designs because they are too outrageous but I love them nonetheless and others I can’t wait to find a way to interpret and look to my next client as prey to be the guinea pig. Here are some items that I have recently collected and would love to share, they are in no particular order but it’s worth scrolling down to view all so you don’t miss any! One Box One Chair. Designer Sungun Chang came up with a portable seating that recently won this year’s red dot award for design concept.

One Box One Chair

Capitalising on the strength of corrugated cardboard, One Box, One Chair is a dual-use box that transforms into a chair (and back again) with a few simple folds. The original structure of the box is maintained, and the chair can easily be converted back into a box when necessary. For instance, a student could use a box as a chair when she is living in a dorm, and use it as a container when she is moving out. The chair is created by pushing one corner of the box into an arch shape. The main existing fold lines of the box are maintained, even though its shape is reconfigured. Formable Furniture. Creating Wooden Origami Furniture – Table And Chairs. Here’s one furniture design who’s inspiration may have been partly taken from Origami, the Japanese art of folding paper. Wood as we all know is usually used as a rigid material for furniture and structures, holding its final designed shape, but this is one instance wherein it seems to be dynamic and organic in nature. Robert Van Embricqs , an architectural designer based in Amsterdam, designed pieces of wooden furniture that transforms and molds from what seems to be flat pieces of wooden boards into an intricate web of woven wooden slats forming functional tables and chairs.

Every wooden piece and wooden slat of each furniture was strategically measured, cut out to size and connected to other pieces with hinges. Each piece with its own role and moving in unison with the others as it dynamically transforms from the flattened out state to the formed furniture. The final piece of furniture is an intricate web of interwoven wood slats ready to be used for its intended purpose. Cerruti baleri. A chair is for sitting on. Sillones adaptables.

Here are a couple of images of SuperFoam Chair, a chair made of foam with giant bubbles by designer Rich Gilbert. Gilbert, a student at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College in London, cast the chair in a mold full of hollow plastic balls to create the bubbles. See a video of Gilbert making the chair on his website. Here's some more info from Gilbert: I'm currently studying Industrial Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London and recently produced the SuperFoam chair. SuperFoam is an experiment in trying to create a super-sized foamed structure, in developing a specialized casting process I could design the properties of the foam itself so it flexed and deformed to create the chair structure.

Delicate Paper Chairs - Web-Patterned 'Hechima 4' Seating Only Looks Frail. Catacaos chair by Otero. Normally when you hear the word “chair” you pretty much know what to expect. Well, not with this chair, as you can’t possibly be creative enough to imagine what the Catacaos chair looks like. It has an original part made of flexible plastic material but also by its design, the chair Catacaos designed by Peruvian designer Frederico Otero, takes a different view of the back of the chair. The tapes reveal a separate wave motion, which comes back to its original design after it was pressed under the weight of its user. These plastic pieces look like the petals of a flower and are somewhat concentrical even if they are not round, but rather like a teardrop shape.

The smaller one is on the inside and the exterior ones are larger and larger. The range colour of the “backrest” bands makes this chair even more conspicuous and it gets really interesting when you realize this plastic is actually transparent. Scissor Chair.
