Using Scaffolded Instruction To Optimize Learning. ERIC Identifier: ED474301Publication Date: 2002-12-00 Author: Larkin, Martha Source: ERIC Clearinghouse on Disabilities and Gifted Education Arlington VA.Today's responsible learners are challenged to (a) know how to learn, (b) access changing information, (c) apply what is learned, and (d) address complex real-world problems in order to be successful. The ultimate academic goal is for students to become independent lifetime learners, so that they can continue to learn on their own or with limited support. Scaffolded instruction optimizes student learning by providing a supportive environment while facilitating student independence.WHAT IS SCAFFOLDED INSTRUCTION? The concept of scaffolding (Bruner, 1975) is based on the work of Vygotsky, who proposed that with an adult's assistance, children could accomplish tasks that they ordinarily could not perform independently.

Teachers need preparation for life in the classroom IN October 2006, a survey of 1351 state, Catholic and independent school teachers in all states and territories found strong support for an overhaul of university teaching courses. Those surveyed had all graduated in the previous three years, and a strong view emerged about the need for better training in what and how to teach.

Their comments included: "The university is out of touch with real teaching" and "They were more concerned with the academic aspect of the degree than the practical hands-on experience that could have really made my transition into teaching so much easier. " Against this background, it is encouraging that the University of Wollongong's four-year Bachelor of Early Childhood Education course is being restructured. The course trains teachers of children aged up to eight in childcare centres, preschools and the early years of primary school. Siegfried Engelmann and Direct Instruction. The purpose of the MoraModules Website is to provide a resource for teachers and students who are learning in two languages with resources and programs to enhance instruction in second and foreign language and Spanish/English biliteracy classrooms. My mission is to create an easily accessible link between university scholarship, K-12 educators and the general public to disseminate professional research-validated professional development and classroom-ready lessons based on pedagogically sound principles and practices in language education.

My greater purpose is to ensure equal educational opportunities for linguistically and culturally diverse students in public schools and for every student to have the opportunity to become fully multilingual. I believe that my perspective as an expert in bilingual cross-cultural education contributes to informed discussions of critical educational issues. Jill Kerper Mora.
