There’s been an interesting debate with my followers on Twitter these days: which one is the best uploading / quick sharing app for Mac? Going deeper, the fight was between Cloud , “ the wet dream of every Mac user ” which is still in private beta, and Tinygrab , the application powered by the latest MacHeist nano bundle. Cloud is a new application which allows to quickly share almost everything in your Mac: pictures, Photoshop files, URLs. Cloud is lovely, it has a nice cloud icon which sits in the menubar and has a unique, system-wide shortcut for uploading stuff to “the cloud”. Read my exclusive preview here if you missed it. If you’ve got the chance of beta testing Cloud.app in this past month, you’ve probably understood all its potential and why it could become one of the best sharing applications for Mac OS X .

Why I Use Both Tinygrab and Cloud. It’s All About Differences.

http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2009/10/20/how-to-get-your-old-system-ready-for-a-windows-7-upgrade/ While most computer techs and savvy users usually advise against performing an upgrade from one Windows version to another (what's called an "in-place upgrade"). There's always the chance that your new OS could inherit some problems from the old, after all, and it could potentially cause issues with your current programs or hardware. Truth is, some users want to upgrade and Windows 7 handles the process pretty well. While it might not be an ideal situation, there are plenty of people who are going to take a stroll down the upgrade path.

While much of the Download Squad audience is already well-educated about Windows 7, there are still many of you who might not know what all the fuss is about. Localism: Fewer Americans are Relocating | Newsweek Personal Fin

On almost any night of the week, Churchill's Restaurant is hopping. The 10-year-old hot spot in Rockville Centre, Long Island, is packed with locals drinking beer and eating burgers, with some customers spilling over onto the street. "We have lots of regulars—people who are recognized when they come in," says co-owner Kevin Culhane. In fact, regulars make up more than 80 percent of the restaurant's customers.

Twitter -- Illustrated and Illustrative

http://christacy.blogspot.com/2009/06/twitter-illustrated-and-illustrative.html Obviously I'm as shocked as anyone that this article appears in Time Magazine. But it's not only the best article on Twitter that I've read - it's also one of the best descriptions I've ever seen on the massive changes that are occurring right now on the internet, in technology and communications and in consumer behavior. Honestly, this could (and should) be turned into something that explores these topics in far more depth as there are some incredibly important details that are simply hinted at which are in and of themselves worthy of exploration in depth. But... that would be book length probably in that case.
All of these different methods for dealing with IE6 demonstrate that there's no one single answer that works for everyone. This isn't a binary issue. There is no Boolean answer. Instead, there's a sliding scale of support: Design for better browsers, then design alternative solutions to handle IE6 bugs I've often written that designers shouldn't be limited by lowest common denominator browser capabilities.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2009/04/22/raising-katie.html Several pairs of eyes follow the girl as she pedals around the playground in an affluent suburb of Baltimore. But it isn't the redheaded fourth grader who seems to have moms and dads of the jungle gym nervous on this recent Saturday morning. It's the African-American man—six feet tall, bearded and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt—watching the girl's every move. Approaching from behind, he grabs the back of her bicycle seat as she wobbles to a stop. "Nice riding," he says, as the fair-skinned girl turns to him, beaming. "Thanks, Daddy," she replies.

The Thing About Git

The thing about Git is that it's oddly liberal with how and when you use it. Version control systems have traditionally required a lot of up-front planning followed by constant interaction to get changes to the right place at the right time and in the right order. And woe unto thee if a rule is broken somewhere along the way, or you change your mind about something, or you just want to fix this one thing real quick before having to commit all the other crap in your working copy. http://tomayko.com/writings/the-thing-about-git

10 Most Common Misconceptions About User Experience Design

Whitney Hess is an independent user experience designer, writer and consultant based in New York City. She authors the blog Pleasure and Pain . When I tell people that I am a user experience designer, I usually get a blank stare. I try to follow it up quickly by saying that I make stuff easy and pleasurable to use. That’s the repeatable one-liner, but it’s a gross oversimplification and isn’t doing me any favors.

The Discipline of Content Strategy

We, the people who make websites, have been talking for fifteen years about user experience, information architecture, content management systems, coding, metadata, visual design, user research, and all the other disciplines that facilitate our users’ abilities to find and consume content. But who among us is asking the scary, important questions about content, such as “What’s the point?” or “Who cares?” Who’s talking about the time-intensive, complicated, messy content development process?
Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production. The Above-the-Fold Myth We are all well aware that web design is not an easy task. There are many variables to consider, some of them technical, some of them human. The technical considerations of designing for the web can (and do) change quite regularly, but the human variables change at a slower rate. Sometimes the human variables change at such a slow rate that we have a hard time believing that it happens. This is happening right now in web design.

SGN Founder’s Rambling, Jetlagged, Semi-Lucid and Beautiful Emai

SGN founder Shervin Pishevar , jetlagged and sleep deprived on a “secret mision” trip to Eastern Europe, wrote a long and partially lucid email to friends last night. I reprint it here because it captures much of the entrepreneurial spirit that drives so many of the men and women who we write about. The full email, along with a YouTube clip, are reprinted below with Pishevar’s permission. I find myself in a hotel in Eastern Europe after 3 days of red eye flights across 8 time zones on a secret mission for my start up. I have slept only 2-3 hours each day since Tuesday. It is in these sleepless hours, propelled by my inner drive to make a dent in world, where I find the solace to connect with the deepest parts my own soul.
