It’s been a few weeks since we’ve provided an update on the Men in Black III viral campaign, so here’s a quick refresher on what has been going on. Don’t worry, you didn’t miss much, especially since the campaign seems to not have a real goal or driving force.TheMenInBlackSuitsAreReal experience, as Sony dubs it lurches on as BugEyes continues to update his website and Facebook page with interesting real news stories and videos of the voice messages he requested.
He also included a video of himself talking about a clue he got that lead him to Clive’s Tattoo Parlor. Below is the commercial Clive’s made. While there are obvious hints on the website and video (like the legal disclaimer) that Clive is an alien, there’s not much else to the website or commercial from what I can tell. Earlier today, a teaser poster for Men In Black 3 was discovered by Collider.com and it looks to contain the beginning of a Men in Black 3 viral campaign. Embedded in the poster was a link to a Facebook page run by a teenager (BugEyes126) who is convinced that “the men in the black suits are real.” More after the break. As you can see below, the bottom of the teaser poster contained a semi-hidden link to TheMenInBlackSuitsAreReal.com.
The Facebook page only has 122 likes as of this post, and only one status update. Earlier today Matt spotted the first teaser poster for Sony’s Men in Black 3 and snapped a picture. The poster’s pretty effective (though slightly headache-inducing if you look too closely) as a bunch of “MIB3” logos make up Tommy Lee Jones’s face. Jones has a smaller role this time around though, as the film finds Will Smith traveling back in time to save a young Agent K (Josh Brolin) and avert a world-ending disaster.
Production on the film was plagued with troubles, going so far as to take a hiatus during filming to work on the script. We don’t yet know how things turned out, but this teaser poster likely means a trailer is coming our way soon so we should have a better idea of what to expect. Josh Brolin was spotted on set fling down a wire to escape a soon to be CGI spaceship running towards the bunker. According to the paper the production has rented a warehouse on Rewe Street in Bushwick to store props and vehicles for the movie. Tommy, 64, is still very much in the movie however - just that this time round, the alien battling blockbuster has a time travel twist to it.
However, Will Smith, 42, still plays himself as Agent J in the scenes supposedly from the 1960s, which were shot in the Bronx, New York, last night - meaning his character must have gone back in time. Why Did Men in Black III Go Into Production Without a Script? "The studio built in a break in production that was scheduled to last from late December through mid-February, during which the remainder of the screenplay was supposed to be completed," notes the report. "Now the hiatus has been extended until March 28, and a new writer, David Koepp, who did uncredited work on the first MIB, has been brought on board to work out complex script issues involving time travel. " This delay is costing the production millions, but apparently things will balance out in the end because of New York state tax breaks that would have been lost if MIB III did not start shooting by late 2010. Other executives have commented that no tax break in the world is worth what Sony is doing with this film. Says The Hollywood Reporter, "MIB III, scheduled to open in 3D in May 2012, has a budget that will easily pass $200 million.
