Eco-bulbs 'a health hazard for babies and pregnant women due to mercury inside' By David Derbyshire Updated: 10:26 GMT, 23 December 2010 Energy-saving light bulbs were at the centre of a fresh health scare last night after researchers claimed they can release potentially harmful amounts of mercury if broken. Levels of toxic vapour around smashed eco-bulbs were up to 20 times higher than the safe guideline limit for an indoor area, the study said. It added that broken bulbs posed a potential health risk to pregnant women, babies and small children. From a normal light bulb to the energy saving model. The concerns surround ‘compact fluorescent lamps’ (CFLs), the most common type of eco-bulb in Britain, which are mini-versions of the strip lights found in offices.
The European Union is phasing out the traditional ‘incandescent bulbs’ used for more than 120 years and is forcing people to switch to low-energy alternatives to meet its climate change targets. A CFL uses a fifth of the energy of a conventional bulb and can save £7 a year in bills. Placebo effect works even if patients know they're getting a sham drug | Science. Patients can benefit from being treated with sham drugs even if they are told they contain no active ingredient, scientists have found. The finding suggests that the placebo effect could work without the need for any deception on the part of the doctor, as had been previously thought. When a patient undergoes a sham treatment for a disorder - such as taking a sugar pill - but still experiences a measurable improvement in their condition this is known as the placebo effect.
It was widely thought, however, that the effect only works if the patient believes that the treatment they are receiving contains an active ingredient. Dummy treatments that might elicit the placebo effect are often used in clinical trials as a comparison group to allow scientists to measure the additional effects of experimental medicines. The results, published in the scientific journal PLoS ONE, showed that the placebo pills were more effective at relieving symptoms compared with doing nothing at all.

You Don't Know Where Your Drugs Come From And Neither Does The FDA; U.S. Imports 90 Percent Of Its Antibiotics (And Vitamin A) From China By Richard A. McCormack richard@manufacturingnews.com China has surpassed the United States as the world's largest manufacturer of bulk drugs, vitamins and nutritional supplements and is now exporting a large portion of its production to the United States.
Tens of millions of American consumers have no idea that the majority of the over-the-counter drugs they are purchasing now originate in China, where there are "relatively few regulations related to pharmaceutical exports in comparison to industrialized economies," according to a report commissioned by the U.S. -China Economic and Security Review Commission. In 2008, China produced $25.7 billion worth of bulk drugs (up 23 percent from 2007), and exported $17.6 billion of that output (an increase of 30 percent over 2007). High Society exhibition: can dope give us hope? State and federal marijuana laws collide. By Oren Dorell, USA TODAY People who use marijuana for medicinal purposes in states where it is legal are being penalized by the federal government because pot is still illegal under U.S. law. At Denver unemployment offices, medical users fired for failing a drug test are denied unemployment benefits, says lawyer Kimberlie Ryan, who represents some of those applicants. In California, Jim Lacy, 60, who has an arthritic hip and uses medical marijuana for pain relief, says he has had his stash confiscated and been threatened with arrest at Border Patrol checkpoints near his Jacumba home.
In Las Vegas, N.M., cancer patient Robert Jones, 70, says he has been notified that his federal rent subsidy is being revoked because he is a medical-marijuana user. Marijuana dispensary operator Steve DeAngelo of Harborside Health Center in Oakland says his federally insured bank dumped his account because he deals in an illegal drug. Problems occur at airport security checkpoints in medical marijuana states.
What Happens to Your body if you stop smoking Right now? - Global One TV. Contributed byLiz Lewis I think one of the main reasons it’s so hard to quit smoking is because all the benefits of quitting and all the dangers of continuing seem very far away. Well, here’s a little timeline about some of the more immediate effects of quitting smoking and how that will affect your body RIGHT NOW. * In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal. * In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal. * In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. So, you have more immediate things to look forward to if you quit now besides just freaking out about not being able to smoke. Quit now! Mobile Health 2010. Summary of findings The online health-information environment is going mobile, particularly among younger adults.
The Pew Internet Project’s latest survey of American adults, conducted in association with the California HealthCare Foundation, finds that 85% use a cell phone. Of those: 17% of cell owners have used their phone to look up health or medical information and 29% of cell owners ages 18-29 have done such searches. 9% of cell owners have software applications or “apps” on their phones that help them track or manage their health. Some 15% of those ages 18-29 have such apps. This means that health-information searches and communications have joined the growing array of non-voice data applications that are being bundled into cell phones. Fully 76% of cell phone owners (age 18+) use their phones to take pictures, for example, up from 66% in April 2009. Mobile health apps Mobile health information The demographic mix shifts a bit when it comes to looking for health information on the go.
