I was introduced to these ideas as they related to test taking, never as a way to think about my writing or to better understand my reading. I remember working with these ideas in isolation on worksheets. Luckily, we now have great picture books that can introduce kids to these language concepts. We certainly don't want students to only be able to name these amazing techniques that authors use. We want them to be able to understand them in the context of their own reading and writing. The books I look for to introduce these concepts to children are those that invite understanding and play.

For a while, I’ve been thinking a lot about the nonfiction titles in my room. Last summer I started to get anxious about whether or not I had enough books in the room that my Grade 2/3s could pick up and read independently. It seemed like my “best” nonfiction titles were books that I needed to read to my students. Which was wonderful because I had some amazing titles to use as we model strategies, but what about when it was independent reading time?

Now, here I am a year later. I am fortunate to be looping my Grade 2/3 class into Grade 3/4 and so I have a sense of this group of children, what they wonder about and what I think might inspire them. Fortunately, I was given a relevant, exciting idea by the grade 2 teachers who recently requested I tie library instruction into their current unit of inquiry "Communities are organised based on the needs and wants of people". I am supposed to guide students in examining the roles libraries play in communities, perhaps looking at different libraries around the world.

Immediately my thoughts jumped to making lists of wants and needs, watching the Biblioburro, learning about library arrangement, reading My Librarian is a Camel.... It's alright, though...it's fun homework. She asked me to share at our faculty retreat this year about collaboration. She feels like we have resources that we don't always tap into available in our school building...both in special area teachers as well as print materials. Don't we all? We get so busy with writing lesson plans and trying to figure out what we're doing tomorrow that we sometimes overlook amazing opportunities right before our eyes.

I've spent a lot of time this summer reading. Jennifer Fosberry has written several of these books including: My Name is Not Isabella, Isabella, Star of the Story, and Isabella Girl On the Go. This book is a lot of fun! I have to thank my library friend, Shannon, for sharing this idea. This book was our principal's pick last year at our Scholastic book fair and I couldn't keep it on the shelves! I love all of the books written by Hanoch Piven.
