University students in Virginia crack smartcard chips (corrected

Just days after Cambridge researchers broke Chip & PIN in the U.K., across the pond, a graduate student at the University of Virginia along with two friends have cracked the code used for the chips inside smartcards. The cards are a common sight in the U.S., subway passes, door badges, and car keypads all use the RFID technology that was cracked. The results of the code being decrypted means attackers can clone them, and use the cloned cards for nefarious means. Karsten Nohl, age 26, and his two German partners dismantled the chip found inside the smartcards, and mapped out the security algorithm. They ran the formula through a computer program and broke the encryption after a few hours. "I don't want to help attackers, but I want to inform people about the vulnerabilities of these cards," said Nohl, a Ph.D. candidate in computer engineering to the Associated Press. http://www.thetechherald.com/articles/University-students-in-Virginia-crack-smartcard-chips-(corrected)/4342/
The only thing that I'd rather own than Windows is English, because then I could charge you two hundred and forty-nine dollars for the right to speak it. The utility model of computing - computing resources delivered over the network in much the same way that electricity or telephone service reaches our homes and offices today - makes more sense than ever. http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/s/scott_mcnealy.html

(page 2 of 2) "When someone goes out for lunch, we don't compete with all the other lunch places around because our customer has already put in an order before leaving their building." While many other bakeries have suffered or closed their doors in 2009, Specialty's "has been staying above water" this year, she says. The same can be said of Industrial Specialties Manufacturing, a $5 million, 15-employee, Englewood (Colo.) outfit that makes and distributes miniature pneumatic, vacuum, and fluid circuitry components.

http://www.isixsigma.com/new-to-six-sigma/getting-started/what-six-sigma/ Six Sigma – what does it mean? Six Sigma at many organizations simply means a measure of quality that strives for near perfection. Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects (driving toward six standard deviations between the mean and the nearest specification limit) in any process – from manufacturing to transactional and from product to service.

It's a sign that I'm ready to get back to blogging that at 7 pm on Christmas night, cuddled with my new baby and surrounded by my family, I read a Tweet that made my blood boil . It boiled with that s pecial kind of anger that can only be quenched with a long, blog rant. That's fortunate, because my "maternity leave" has about another week left on it. It's unfortunate, because I haven't started my increasingly less mysterious new job yet. That leaves me with one place to write: This blog which has a tiny readership. So hopefully this story finds a way to circulate out to the wider audience of government officials and old money elites who have good intentions of wanting to make their city a beacon for entrepreneurship.

"Hands in the air like you just don’t care”, for all those people who look 40-odd but still act 20...A shout out too for all those ageless people who think a Gen Y attitude goes a long way. Aren’t they the ones having more fun, telling employers where to get off and hopping on to the next employer with more cash in their pocket and a flash new title? I recently spoke at a Sydney HR conference on things Gen Y; namely how to attract and retain the young at heart. Whilst a lot has been said on the topic and with our own company being very Gen Y, the ground was familiar but strangely moving underneath me. http://text100.typepad.com/
