Hans Ulrich Obrist (HUO:) You were talking about differences between Europe and America? Challenge Developing the Brand Strategy for a New Boutique Hotel Group LodgeWorks is a 700-person hotel development and management firm whose leadership team created Residence Inn and Summerfield Suites. In our second project for them, LodgeWorks asked us to help them invent their new boutique hotel brand. What We Did Over the course of 12 months, we conducted extensive research into guest needs, market conditions and industry trends. We collaborated with the client team to invent and test an array of bold new hotel concepts, eventually defining a unique target, position and detailed guest experience model. Phillips+Co. also created the hotel's name, which will be announced in May 2007.

"Visual language is one of your best friends," she says. "Giving an idea shape and a visual representation makes it come to fruition." Her consultancy helps clients such as Disney and Razorfish achieve brighter brainstorming and juicier collaboration by doodling. And at conferences around the world, from Austin to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, her "sketch notes" on mural-size sheets of butcher paper bring keynotes to life in real time.
