ReUse Warehouse. Construction material accounts for 38% of the waste stream in the Houston area.

ReUse Warehouse

The Building Materials Reuse Warehouse, a component of the City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department, benefits the community by providing space for excess building materials that would otherwise be dumped in local landfills. We accept material from individuals, supply companies, and builders, and make it freely available for reuse by any non-profit organization. The Reuse Warehouse is funded in part by a grant from the Houston Galveston Area Council, a region-wide voluntary association of local governments in the 13-county Gulf Coast Planning region of Texas. More than one-third of the waste stream in the Houston area is made up of construction and demolition material, much of which could be diverted and re-used. By storing the materials until they can be used by community groups, the Warehouse will keep these valuable resources out of our local landfills.

Free Workbench Plans – The $175 Homemade Workbench

Need a workbench for your shop, something solid that will likely last longer than you will? Something you can do serious woodworking on? Mount a vice? Build shelves and cabinets and a crib for the new baby? Or, seeing as you’re the type that wants to build stuff, why not skip buying something pricey and build the very workbench you’ll be using for your future projects?

The free plans are available via PDF, with an accompanying set of notes on the Popular Woodworking website. Miter Saw Stop Block? - Family Woodworking. Woodworking.about.com/library/WoodworkingProjects/MiterSawStandPlans.pdf. Build the Stock Supports - Free Woodworking Plans to Build a Portable Compound Miter Saw Stand. In the final step of these free woodworking plans, we'll build a pair of stock supports to hold the stock at the proper height when it is being cut.

Build the Stock Supports - Free Woodworking Plans to Build a Portable Compound Miter Saw Stand

To begin, cut two lengths of treated 2x4 to 16" in length and two more at 12". Set these pieces aside for the moment. Measure the height from the top of the melamine table to the base of the miter saw's table. On most saws, this height should be somewhere between three and four inches. Add the thickness of the melamine table top to this distance and you'll have the final height needed for each stock support. Next, subtract this distance from the width of two 2x4s (which should be seven inches). Subtract the height needed for each stock support from the width of the two 2x4s and divide this result in half. On the edge of the 16" piece of stock, make a mark at 7-1/4" and another at 8-3/4".

Repeat with the other pair and secure the half-lap joints using wood glue. Finally, slip the supports onto the beam where desired.
