Observations - Chapter Three

But in China (whose shadow theatre is named Ying Xi) and Turkey (whose shadow theatre is named for the popular character Karagoz), they are operated horizontally (the manipulation rods are positioned at a 90-degree angle in relation to the screen). Consequently, some scholars postulated that the Chinese and Turkish shadow theatres were developed independently from India's or Indonesia's because the operation of the Chinese and Turkish flat cutouts is dissimilar to the other countries' method, which is to operate the puppets with rods from below. But in India, we see that the pavaikuttu uses detachable rods that connect to the puppets' hands when required, and, if the puppeteer is standing while manipulating the hands and arms (a common procedure), the operation is by horizontally held rods, exactly as in China and Turkey.

Bengal is the only place in India that has rod puppets. Chinese Rod Puppets. Wayang Puppetry Exhibit. While in Santa Fe, we went to the Museum of International Folk Art, which was amazing.

Wayang Puppetry Exhibit

We saw an exhibit of Indonesian shadow puppets called Wayang Kulit. The puppets (wayang) are flat leather creations elaborately decorated and perforated, casting the coolest shadows on canvas behind which the puppeteer sits. These performances are accompanied by an orchestra of drums and other Indonesian instruments, and lasts for about 9 straight hours, from dusk to dawn. People come and go, generally only staying for part of the show, whereas the puppeteer must perform the entire production from start to finish. Now that's stamina! Audience members can casually move back and forth between the front and back of the screen to see shadows or the actual puppets.

Used as a method of communication and social commentary, these shows pay homage to important ceremonies like weddings, elections, or holidays. Center for Puppetry Arts_Museum_Permanent Exhibit. Project #1 Cutout Animation

Because the cut-outs are flat, they must work across or up and down the screen in a flat plane. You simply cannot walk a cut-out puppet towards camera in relation to a fixed back ground or make it turn in three dimensions. However it is always possible to design an inventive solution for each and every storytelling scenario. For example, a character can be made to walk over a hill to disappear behind it, then reappear as a smaller cutout figure ascending a more distant hill. These limitations can actually lead to striking stylistic visual solutions. By necessity, the type of animation method you will be using for this project is known as 'straight-ahead animation' which requires an intuitive approach to the choreography of the events.

Later in the semester, you will be able to contrast this approach with forthcoming exercises using the 'pose-to-pose animation' technique. What do your characters do with their object? Tuesday 15 March. European Collection.
