9 Apps for Young Scientists · Playful Learning

She has a great list of app recommendations for the young scientists in our lives. Mariah asked me to put together a post on science apps available for children. Here are some great new apps that I have encountered recently. Please do leave the links to new applications in the area of science that you have found, as I would love to see more. This is an area that Master R loves and therefore we are always on the look out for new and engaging applications. Here are my top science finds for little ones ages four and above: Planets – This application, which is universal, therefore available for both iPhone and iPad, is very clever. Make sure to check out Rebecca’s other app recommendations in the posts below (click on the photo)… Chip Bag Shrinkies : Mad About Science, Science Toys, Science Kits, Gadgets, Novelties & Gift Ideas. By Meera Dolasia on June 7, 2012 CCSSNAS-1NAS-3Word Search The water in Senegal's Lake Retba always seems to have a pinkish hue to it. However, catch it during the dry summer months when the saline levels are high and you will see it turn strawberry pink and sometimes, even red. The good news is that color is not the result of chemicals being dumped in the lake but nature, working its magical tricks! Located in the Cape Vert Peninsula that lies north east of Senegal's capital Dakar, the lake's unusual appearance is caused by a salt-loving green micro alga called Dunaliella Salina that resides in the lake, known for its high concentration of the mineral. As you can imagine, very few organisms can survive in such highly saline conditions.

While the color may make the lake appear eerie and unsafe, the micro organism is safe not only to swim amidst, but also, consume - Good news for the locals that are constantly wading in to mine the salt. This can be done before the bottle is put inside the model volcano in case you want to prepare ahead of time, otherwise, a small funnel works just fine. Stir the baking soda and enough cherry jello mix to make a pinkish powder. Either wrap the soda mixture in tissue paper or use a funnel to add it directly into the bottle. Tissue helps get all the soda in the vinegar at once, but if the funnel hole is large enough, that method works just fine. Trial 2 warm water 1/4 cup vinegar (up to a cup for large bottles) 2 tablespoons baking soda cherry jello granules.
